UTC women still third in Virginia

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s golf team had a different leader Saturday but the same overall result. The Mocs remained in third place after two rounds of the 15-team Princess Anne Invitation­al at Virginia Beach. Led by an evenpar 70 from Rheagan Hall and a 71 from Michaela Kulhankova, they shot a collective 291 for a two-day 571 — nine strokes behind LSU and 14 behind leader Virginia Tech going into the final round. First-day tournament leader Esme Hamilton was tied for eighth at 139 while Hall shared 12th at 142. Maddy McDanel, Kulhankova and Kirsty Beckwith had totals of 146, 148 and 149.

› Four-time champion David Noll Jr. and fellow Dalton golfer Vance Embry lost their quarterfin­al matches Saturday morning in the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championsh­ip at Johns Creek, Georgia, to Johns Creek residents Connor McKinnon (1 up) and Harrison Mink (3 and 2). Mink is in the final this morning against Sugar Hill’s Austin Mancilla, who defeated McKinnon 2 and 1 in a semifinal. Mink won 6 and 5 in his.

VOLLEYBALL

› UTC’s volleyball team slipped to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in the Southern Conference with a 3-0 home loss Saturday to Western Carolina (10-7, 4-0). The set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 25-20. UTC’s Dani Szczepansk­i extended her streak of matches with double-digit kills to nine with 11, while Gylian Finch had 10 kills and 11 digs, Maddie Halsey 32 assists and 14 digs, Megan Kaufman 16 digs, Brenna Everingham 12 digs and Maia Rackel eight kills.

› Lee University lost leads of 2-1 in sets and 7-3 in fifth-set points in falling 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-14, 15-11) to visiting Montevallo (9-7, 3-1) in Gulf South volleyball Saturday. Hanna Matthews had 49 assists, Bailey Kress 15 kills and Abby Stroh 14 kills and 15 digs for Lee (6-9, 0-4), and Rachel Junen and Quinne Daoust added eight kills apiece.

› Bryan College lost 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 24-26, 25-22) in Appalachia­n Athletic Conference play Friday evening at Milligan and fell 3-1 again (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) Saturday at Bluefield. At Milligan, which got 49 assists and 20 digs from Cleveland’s Kellee Geren, Gigi Ford had 11 kills and 17 digs, Rheagan Kean 28 digs, Jaleigh Rogan 17 assists and Paige Randolph seven kills for Bryan (14-8, 8-4).

› Covenant College won 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 30-28, 25-21) over host LaGrange but lost 3-2 (2025, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13) to Huntingdon in a USA South tri-match. Leah Buys had 33 assists and 12 digs in the win for the Lady Scots (4-12, 3-2), when Meriel Chupp, Alexa Spurling and Riley Howe had seven kills each and Emily Moore and Sara Delk had 22 and 14 digs. Spurling served four aces. Against Huntingdon (13-10, 4-0), Buys had 46 assists, Allie Jakes 16 kills, Delk 12 kills and 16 digs, Howe 11 kills and 13 digs, Chupp 10 kills and Moore 18 digs.

› Cleveland State stretched its winning streak to five matches with a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) over Central Carolina CC and a 3-1 triumph (23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-12) over tri-match host Southwest Virginia. Aly Grace Lemons had 11 kills in the first win, and Stephanie Burke had 12 in the first three sets of the finale.

SOCCER

› Bryan breezed to a pair of homecoming AAC shutout soccer wins Saturday against St. Andrews, 5-0 in the men’s game and 3-0 in the women’s. Makena Giles scored twice in the first 24 minutes and Kylie Murphy added a second-half goal for the Lady Lions (7-5, 6-1), who outshot their guests 21-3 (10-2 on goal) and out-cornered them 8-0. Artur Dombrowski scored first for the Lions (4-42, 4-1-1), from a David Solis assist at 29:55, and Brad Spooner and Jonathan Ricketts followed with two goals and an assist apiece.

Josh Cash had two assists. Bryan’s shot margins were 17-3 overall, 8-2 on goal.

› Covenant posted two USA South road shutout wins, 4-0 over the Mary Baldwin men and 2-0 over the LaGrange women.

Jake Major, Keegan Weekley, Griffin Felton and Jesse Riggs scored for the Scots (10-1-1, 7-0), and Parker Owen, Riggs and Austin Berry had assists. Anna Robertson and Tori Deen scored in the 76th and 78th minutes for the Lady Scots (4-4-2, 2-0-1), from passes by Addy Cronan and Sophia Andre. Lucy Sandhoff had three saves.

FOOTBALL

› UTC offensive coordinato­r Joe Pizzo and defensive coordinato­r Lorenzo Ward will be the guest speakers for the Chattanoog­a Quarterbac­k Club’s monthly noon luncheon meeting Monday, and the public is invited. Meetings are at the Chattanoog­a Masonic Center across 20th Street from Finley Stadium, and parking is free. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
