Paladins roll past Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Darren Grainger threw four touchdown passes and Devin Wynn had 278 yards from scrimmage and three scores as Furman beat Samford 58-14 on Saturday.

The visiting Paladins ran 60 times for 460 yards and finished with 647 total yards. Wynn’s 217 rushing yards are the ninth-best single-game showing in program history, and Grainger complement­ed the ground pounding by being efficient through the air, finishing 6-of-9 for 183 yards with no intercepti­ons.

Furman (4-2, 3-0 Southern Conference) scored on its first nine possession­s — seven straight touchdowns followed by a field goal and another touchdown that capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter.

Samford (3-3, 2-1) got seven points on the opening possession of the game, but Wynn went 75 yards for a touchdown on Furman’s first play from scrimmage to start a 35-point run. The Paladins led 28-7 at the end of the first quarter and 42-14 at halftime.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Joe Newman ran for 185 yards and four touchdowns, and Miller Mosely added a short score on a long drive late as Wofford’s running game ground down East Tennessee State.

The Terriers (3-2, 2-1) gained 409 of their 464 offensive yards on the ground while holding the Buccaneers to 258 total yards.

Newman scored on runs of 1 and 59 yards before Tyler Keltner kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Buccaneers (2-4, 0-3). Newman’s 8-yard scoring run on the next possession and his 15-yarder on the following possession, set up via fumble recovery by Ryan Titus, made it 28-3 at halftime after the Terriers held the Buccaneers to 53 yards.

Quay Holmes scored for ETSU (2-4, 0-3) on 2-yard run in the third quarter and Trey Mitchell hit Holmes on a 26-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Reece Udinski threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Jakob Herres late in the game to help Virginia Military Institute snap a 12-game losing skid against The Citadel that dated to Nov. 15, 2002.

Brandon Rainey scored on a 3-yard touchdown run that pulled the host Bulldogs (2-4, 0-2) to 27-21 with 3:22 to play before Udinski connected with Herres three plays later for a score with 2:18 remaining.

Udinski was 25-of-35 passing for 335 yards and three touchdowns, and he stretched his SoCon single-season record to 252 consecutiv­e passes without an intercepti­on. Herres had eight catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns, and Alex Ramsey ran for 97 yards and a score for the Keydets (3-3, 2-1).

Rainey was 19-of-34 passing for 233 yards and ran for three short-yardage touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

› Gardner-Webb 24, Western Carolina 21 CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Kurt Everett kicked a 33-yard field goal with no time remaining to lift Big South Conference member Gardner-Webb to victory over the SoCon’s Catamounts.

Everett’s winning kick capped a grinding 16-play, 54-yard drive by the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-3), who were led on the ground by Jayln Cage’s 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Whitlow, who finished with 194 yards through the air, completed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Chuma Awanna in the third quarter to put the Runnin’ Bulldogs on top 21-14. The Catamounts (1-4) answered with quarterbac­k Tyrie Adams’ touchdown run early in the fourth to make it 21-all, but Gardner-Webb then struggled until the final push that ate up the final 4:24.

Adams passed for 138 yards and a touchdown.
