John Michael Thurman, 78, of Chattanoog­a, TN passed away peacefully at his home on June 1, 2020.

He was born in Miami, FL and graduated from Red Bank High School in 1960. After graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves. He attended Chattanoog­a State, Vanderbilt and Belmont Universiti­es in Nashville and Gorski Institue in Chicago, IL. He attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Soddy, TN and was retired from the Hamilton County Health Department as a drug and alcohol counselor in the Homeless Health Department.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Thurman, mother, Crystal Alge Cargile, step-father, Felix Cargile and sister, Crystal McSpadden.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Lovern Thurman, two daughters, Marla H. Thurman and Kelly D. McCary, two sons, John Michael Thurman, II and Matthew (Mikal) Thurman, two step-children, Kent Lovern and Kerri Day. Grandchild­ren include Adam Templeton, Emily Templeton, Damian Thurman and Jaxon Thurman, great-granddaugh­ter, Lynnon Templeton and his special doggie, Bogie. Special love and gratitude to Avalon Hospice for their care.

Because of the COVID-19 issues, a memorial service at Legacy Funeral Home will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the McKamey Animal Shelter, 4500 N. Access Road, Chattanoog­a, TN 37415.
