› BRADENTON, Fla. — Arike Ogunbowale scored 24 points and Kayla Thornton added 17 as the Dallas Wings beat the Atlanta Dream 85-75 on Saturday. After Atlanta’s Chennedy Carter scored a season-high 35 points against the Seattle Storm on Thursday, the Wings — and most notably Thornton — held the WNBA rookie from Texas A&M to 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting. Carter’s frustration got the better of her when she was whistled for a technical foul with 8 1/2 minutes remaining, and Moriah

Jefferson sank the free throw to give Dallas (3-4) a 69-59 lead. The Dream (2-5) led 42-41 at halftime, but after Carter’s 3-pointer with 7:47 left in the third, Ogunbowale made a layup and a 3, and the Wings led the rest of the way. Betnijah Laney paced Atlanta with 16 points, Elizabeth Williams scored 15 and Courtney Williams had 14. Alisha

Gray added 12 points for the Wings, while Jefferson grabbed 10 rebounds. ›

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Ben Simmons, an NBA All-Star this season and last, will have surgery on his left knee, a big blow for the Philadelphia 76ers and their hopes of making a deep postseason run. The 76ers announced Saturday that Simmons (6-foot10 240 pounds) will be leaving Walt Disney World and the bubble environment the NBA has used to restart its 2019-20 season and set up the playoffs, which will include Philadelphia. There was no immediate timeframe for the 24-year-old’s return, and it’s likely that no firm timetable on his recovery will be set until after the surgery. Simmons left midway through the third quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Washington Wizards because of injury. Losing him is the latest setback for a franchise that has experienced many tough breaks on the injury front in recent years.
