Texas will try to weather storm
Stick to the script: Iowa State can’t panic on Friday in Austin even if the Longhorns start fast. Texas had two weeks to prepare for this game after Kansas was forced to postpone last weekend. Tom Herman’s program should come out fired up with some pent-up aggression. The Cyclones need to weather the storm, stick to the game plan and turn the contest into a 60-minute dog fight. Even an early deficit is no reason for Iowa State to abandon the run game.
Build confidence: The Iowa State offense, like most offenses, is on a different level when its quarterback is playing with confidence. Quarterback Brock Purdy has struggled in both of Iowa State’s losses. He’s played well in wins. Simple, right? Head coach Matt Campbell should use play-action early, throw on first down and use the short passing game to get Purdy into an early rhythm and to keep Texas’ defense guessing.
Keys for Texas
Force passing situations: Iowa State’s offensive success in 2020 has hinged on its ability to run the football. Running back Breece Hall has rushed for over 100 yards in four consecutive games and leads the Big 12 in rushing yards. Purdy, however, has struggled when he’s been forced to carry the offense. The Longhorns defense needs to take away Iowa State’s run game and force Purdy to win with his arm.
Score early: Another way to force Iowa State into passing situations is to build an early lead. As the road team, the Cyclones will be hoping to keep the game close into the fourth quarter. Texas needs to turn the game into a shootout. Expect the Longhorns to come out firing after sitting out for two weeks. Baylor managed to take a 21-10 halftime lead over Iowa State two weeks ago. The Longhorns should try to follow the same blueprint.
