Two share lead at Torrey Pines

- WIRE REPORTS

SAN DIEGO — Patrick Reed was involved in another rules controversy Saturday in the Farmers Insurance Open, but he also had a share of a two-stroke lead with Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz entering the final round of the PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines Golf Course. On the par-4 10th hole of the South Course, Reed hit a 190-yard shot out of a bunker, and a TV replay showed the ball bounced once before settling into the rough. Believing the ball didn’t bounce, Reed picked it up to see if it was embedded before a rules official arrived. Reed told the official that no one in his group, as well as a nearby volunteer, saw it bounce. Reed was awarded a free drop and saved par. He bogeyed four of the next holes before closing with a birdie for a 2-under 70, and Reed was at 10-under 206 with Ortiz (66). The 30-year-old Reed is an eight-time PGA Tour winner and the 2018 Masters champion, while the 29-year-old Ortiz won the Houston Open in November for his first PGA Tour victory. Five golfers were tied for third, with Americans Sam Burns (70) and Lanto Griffin (72) joined by second-round leader Viktor Hovland (73) of Norway, second-ranked Jon Rahm (72) of Spain and Australia’s Adam Scott (72). Baylor School graduate Luke List (72) was tied for 39th at 1 under. In December 2019 in Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Reed was penalized two strokes for appearing to deliberately improve his lie in a bunker. PGA Tour rules official Ken Tackett said Reed on Saturday “did all the things we ask to do of a player. It’s obviously difficult, and you get to second-guessing when you see video — soft conditions, there’s a lot of variables out there.”

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — T.J. Yates is returning to the Atlanta Falcons as a coach. Yates, a 33-year-old Atlanta-area native who spent the 2014 season backing up current Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, was announced Saturday as the passing game specialist for new head coach Arthur Smith. The Falcons also hired Lanier Goethie as a defensive assistant and Nick Perry as assistant defensive backs coach. Yates was on staff with the Houston Texans the past two seasons, as an offensive assistant in 2019 and as assistant quarterbacks coach in 2020, when Deshaun Watson earned his third Pro Bowl selection. Yates’ seven seasons as an NFL quarterback included three stints with the Texans — he led the franchise to its first playoff victory as a rookie in 2011 — and time with with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins in addition to the Falcons. Atlanta’s other two new assistants come from the college ranks: Goethie coached linebackers at Duke the past three seasons, and Perry spent the past four seasons as a graduate assistant and analyst at Alabama.
