Wild day at Match Play trims field

-

AUSTIN, Texas — Needing to win the final hole to advance, Robert MacIntrye drilled a driver that put the ball within three feet of the cup on the 371-yard 18th. Moments later, Sergio Garcia ended one of the record eight sudden-death playoffs with a hole-in-one.

Already the most fickle event in golf, the Dell Technologies Match Play on Friday was an endless frenzy.

Kevin Na lectured Dustin Johnson about not waiting for a six-inch putt to be conceded, then birdied the last two holes to oust the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking. Patrick Cantlay, practically flawless with 14 birdies and an eagle the first two days, managed only two birdies and lost a playoff with a three-putt.

When group competition at this World Golf Championship finally ended, No. 3 Jon Rahm was the only one of the top 20 seeds who made it to the 16-player knockout stage at Austin Country Club.

“You just never know what can happen out there,” Billy Horschel said after winning on a third playoff hole.

Just about everything did, and there’s no telling what to expect during the win-or-go-home weekend that is ahead in Texas.

Dylan Frittelli became the first No. 64 seed in Match Play history to advance, Ian Poulter also moved on as he won his third straight match as the No. 60 seed and No. 62 Erik van Rooyen got through by beating Daniel Berger on the second playoff hole.

Earlier in the day, Berger won 4 and 2 over Baylor School graduate Harris English to finish group play 2-1. English, seeded 19th, went 1-2.

Jaeger contends

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic — Rafael Campos, Justin Suh and Fabrizio Zanotti shared the lead Friday halfway through the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.

Zanotti’s 4-under 68 was the lowest round among the trio at 7-under 137, but Campos had a bogey-free 69 and Suh’s 69 included an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole.

Joel Dahmen (71) and Tyler Duncan (69) were a stroke back, and the seven golfers tied for sixth at 5 under included Chattanooga’s Stephan Jaeger (73), the former Baylor School and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga standout who led this PGA Tour event after opening with a 66.

Baylor School graduate Luke List, who was tied for 72nd after shooting a 73 on Thursday, withdrew before the second round, with the PGA Tour Communications Twitter account listing vertigo as the reason.
