Apartment fire in Athens displaces 7 families, kills dog

A fire Wednesday at Park Village Apartments in Athens, Tennessee, displaced seven families and left a family dog dead, according to fire officials there.

The fire at the apartment complex on Rocky Mount Road was reported at 4:18 p.m., according to a news release from the Athens Fire Department.

Firefighters found smoke coming from one apartment when they arrived, and police and firefighters made sure everyone evacuated the building, the release states.

There were no injuries among the residents but efforts to resuscitate a family dog were unsuccessful, officials said.

The fire was contained to the one apartment, though other apartments had smoke and water damage that forced those residents to also find another place to stay, the release states. The Red Cross is working with the displaced families.

After investigation, the cause of the fire appears to be from a buildup of lint in the dryer vent hose, officials said.

“We extend our thoughts and prayers to the families affected by this fire,” Chief Brandon Ainsworth said in the release. “I am very proud of the quick response by all of the agencies in protecting life and property in this case.

“This serves as an important reminder to our citizens about keeping your dryer vents clear of lint and other debris,” he said. “Heating elements in household appliances are a leading cause of fire and special care should be taken to prevent damage, or loss of property or life.”

Athens Rural Fire Department and fire departments in Englewood and Madisonville also assisted in fighting the blaze.
