Cpl Henry Helms

RINGGOLD - Corporal Henry Lewis Helms, was killed in action December 2, 1950 while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was Born September 19, 1926 in Dekalb County, Alabama and his family moved to Ringgold in the 1940’s. Corporal Helms served in the last year of World War II and then reenlisted in the U S Army on August 12, 1948. During the Korean War, he served with Dog Company (D Co), 1st Battalion (Bn), 32nd Infantry (1/32 INF), 7th Infantry Division (ID). On December 2, 1950, Cpl. Helms was reported Missing in Action near the Chosin Reservoir in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Corporal Helms is memorialized in the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is also memorialized at the Ringgold Georgia courthouse on a MIA/POW monument. In June 2018, President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un had a meeting and Chairman Kim promised to repatriate American remains collected. On August 1, 2018 55 boxes of remains were returned for scientific analysis and the identification of box 39 was Cpl. Helms.

Cpl. Helms was preceded in death by his father, Green Franklin Helms; sister, Cleo and brothers, Gene Autry and Tommy Joe Helms. Since his death he was joined by his mother, Mary Carroll Helms; brothers, Frank Jr. Henchly “Hank”, and Cecil Helms; and sister, Jessie Mae Colvin.

He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Snyder of Ringgold, GA and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 22, 2021 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Ralph Long officiating. Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 P.m. until funeral time at the funeral home.
