- BY BRANDI DIXON

Halloween marks the beginning of the holiday season and now more than ever keeping your health and wellness at its best is a top priority in the height of the pandemic. Whether you need help with a chronic ailment or are looking for ways to stay proactive, there are professionals in Chattanooga ready to guide you.

A home is where lives are built and memories are made, and it’s the one place that offers a significant level of comfort unlike anywhere else in a person’s life. This truth forms the foundation of 5 Star Home Care.

The state-licensed home care provider offers nonmedical personal care, assistance and companionship for clients to help them maintain their independence and stay in their homes. Services offered include meal preparation, errand-running, laundry and personal care.

“Home — there’s no place quite like it,” said 5 Star President Kenny Higdon of the company’s slogan. “That’s the main reason why people choose us. No place offers more comfort than your own home.”

Care levels range from having someone in the home for minor assistance and companionship a few hours a week to 24/7 care with more assistance from caregivers. The business also has caregivers qualified to help clients with Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Find out how healthcare providers at University Surgical Associates discovered the power of early detection – and found peace of mind through expert and empathetic care throughout the journey.

Traci Kilmartin, prosthetics specialist at University Surgical Associates, was just 39 years old when she discovered a lump in her right breast. She had a history of benign breast lesions, and breast cancer had been on her mind for the past few months. When she discovered a lump during a selfbreast exam, she knew it could be serious.

“When you’re in this situation, you just don’t want it to be real. I kept trying to find different positions to make the lump go away, but it didn’t. When I saw Dr. Laura Witherspoon, she agreed that the lump should be evaluated by ultrasound right away,” said Traci.

Dr. Witherspoon, breast cancer surgeon at USA, completed a biopsy on the lump the same day and confirmed that Traci did in fact have breast cancer. Dr. Witherspoon walked Traci and her husband through the treatment options and talked candidly about possible outcomes.

Halloween is loved holiday for adults and children everywhere, and while we all may know the treats aren’t necessarily the best thing for us, we all indulge at least a little and it seems that kids and candy is an unavoidable combination.

Drs. Robert and Mandy Shearer at Soddy Daisy Smiles actually get into the holiday themselves and want their patients to know that it’s okay to enjoy and there are some things you can do on the front end to have a healthy, but fun, Halloween.

Consider the type of candy you pick to eat. Dr. Mandy added that if possible avoid too much hard candy that can cause cracked teeth or create super sticky residue in the mouth.

“Candy that’s not hard and super sticky is the best for your overall dental health if you’re going to indulge a little,” she said. “Chocolate is actually one of the better candies to eat, especially dark chocolate, my favorite!”

The team at Soddy Daisy Smiles is available to answer any questions or concerns about this sweet season. To schedule an appointment for an exam or cleaning, contact 423-332-5275 or visit soddydaisysmiles.com.

Total knee replacement is a big, brutal operation with a long recovery. It is usually effective at eliminating debilitating knee pain from end stage arthritis, but it comes with some risks and a long arduous rehabilitation.

Some studies have shown up to a 20 % rate of dissatisfaction after surgery. In one local orthopedic surgeon’s opinion, at least half of these surgeries are not needed, instead a much safer technique that spares muscle and ligaments and utilizes a short incision and a small fraction of the amount of metal and plastic. This procedure, minimally invasive partial knee resurfacing using the Repicci technique, has been a special interest of Dr. Marty Redish for nearly 20 years.

“At least half of the patients who undergo total knee replacement today do not need the surgery in my opinion,” explained Dr. Martin Redish, local surgeon who is both practicing and advocating for a new, less invasive option. “This is because they have uni-compartmental arthritis and could instead get a better result with less risk and recovery with minimally invasive partial knee resurfacing (MIPKR). Roughly 60-70 percent of the knee replacements I do are partial knees; the rest I do total knee replacements.”

Hearing loss is a health issue and should be treated as such. Trust your precious sense of hearing to a doctor of audiology, the professional with the education and training to help you succeed on your journey to healthy hearing, like the team at Johnson Audiology. In 2019, Johnson Audiology launched its own 501c3 non-profit to help those in need get hearing aids, the Johnson Audiology Hearing Foundation. Learn more at www.johnsonaudiology. com/foundation.

For years, programmable hearing aids have been classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Class I or Class II medical devices. The difference between Class I and Class II hearing aids is that Class II hearing aids are those that integrate wireless technology, including ear-to-ear communication and Bluetooth. In order to be fit with one of these Class I or Class II hearing aids, a patient would see a licensed hearing care professional, namely an audiologist or a hearing aid dispenser. The hearing care professional conducts a diagnostic hearing test to determine the level of hearing loss, takes measurements and/or custom ear molds, and fits the person with hearing aids based on a thorough review of the person’s unique hearing loss, common listening environments, and other needs.

The doctors at Johnson Audiology are here to help patients navigate their hearing loss and find the best solutions for them.
