Red Wolves earn vital point with road draw

The Chattanooga Red Wolves played the Greenville Triumph SC to a scoreless draw Saturday night in South Carolina.

The Red Wolves (11-5-11), who had lost three of their previous four matches, earned a very important point in the USL League One standings with the tie. Chattanooga is second in the 12-team league with 44 points, two ahead of the Triumph (11-7-9) with just one week remaining in the regular season.

Chattanooga travels to face Forward Madison FC (7-8-12) in the regular-season finale next Saturday, and a second-place finish in the standings would bring the Red Wolves a playoff bye into a semifinal they would host next month at CHI Memorial Stadium in East Ridge. Greenville, the league’s reigning champion, closes against last-place North Carolina FC (7-16-4).

Union Omaha (14-5-8) locked up the league’s regular-season championship and the top seed for the playoffs on Saturday with a 2-0 win against the Richmond Kickers (11-9-7), who are fourth with 40 points.

North Texas SC (10-8-9) is fifth with 39 points, two ahead of the New England Revolution II (11-12-4) and FC Tucson (1010-7).

CFC gets big win

Nick Spielman scored a first-half goal, and the Chattanooga Football Club held on for a big 1-0 win over New Amsterdam FC on Saturday night at Finley Stadium.

Chattanooga FC ended a three-game losing streak — and a stretch of four matches without a win — and improved to 4-7-2 in the National Independent Soccer Association fall schedule with the victory. CFC also matched Chicago House AC with 14 points, good for a tie for seventh in the 10-team league’s standings.

CFC returns to competition next Saturday with a road match against the Maryland Bobcats FC (3-7-3).
