Gregory Brown Sr.
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — Gregory Daniel Brown, Sr., 72, passed away on June 25, 2022. A lifelong resident and Mayor of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, he was the fourth son of Kaky Dineen and Hugh Brown, who predeceased him, along with oldest brother Michael Brown. He had great memories of growing up beside the Lookout Mountain Golf Club, where he developed a life-long love for the Club and the game. Greg inherited his mother’s good nature and his father’s quick wit, and he will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, and humility.
Greg was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Emory’s Goizueta School of Business. He earned the CPA designation and began working for the Decosimo firm before becoming a Professor of Accounting at UTC, where he greatly enjoyed helping his students learn. Following a partnership at ProAd, Inc., Greg found his career home launching and running River City Graphics, where he still met for breakfast with employees years after he sold the business.
From his many career and civic undertakings, Greg developed a discerning but genuinely unpretentious acumen that he shared graciously. He delighted in service to his community, especially as Mayor for six years. He quietly shepherded the sidewalk connection from Tennessee to Georgia and oversaw the restoration of the historic Natural Bridge Park. He served as President of the Lookout Mountain Golf Club, Chattanooga Investors Club, and Blue Springs Club.
Affectionately nicknamed “Son” by his father-in-law, Scotty Probasco, Greg reveled in his roles as devoted husband, father, grandfather, and trusted friend. Also known as Mr. Football, Sonshine, and Professor, Greg valued the camaraderie of his many lifelong friends – who were likewise tagged with a variety of nicknames that read like the funny papers. He recently returned to Highlands Country Club where he appreciated the warm welcome from his longtime pals.
Greg is survived by his wife and cheerleader of 42 years, Zane Probasco Brown, and their children; Greg Brown, Jr., Denver, Colo., Ben and Lynn Brown, and Kaki and Jay Jenkins, and grandchildren; Thompson, Margaret, and Henry Brown, and Brock and Ford Jenkins, Lookout Mtn., Tenn. He is also survived by his brothers; David Brown and Chris and Sue Anne Brown, Chattanooga, Tenn., and sister, Katie and Don Morton, Lookout Mtn., Tenn., and many merry cousins, nieces, and nephews. “Son” also shared an extremely close kinship with his in-laws; Betty Probasco, Ellen and Chris Moore, Susan and Ben Probasco, and Alexis and Scott Probasco.
The family is most grateful to their church family at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church and to their circle of friends near and far who fortified their faith and sustained them with prayer during Greg’s determined fight these last five years. Joe Novenson’s weekly visits were profoundly meaningful to Greg.
There will be a private family memorial service followed by a Celebration of Life at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church on Tuesday June 28 th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are welcome to Love Lookout 316 N.
