- 2023 EDITION • TIMESFREEPRESS.COM Mark Kennedy mkennedy@timesfreepress.com

Chattanooga is known far and wide for its energetic vibe — which powers a region that’s at the crossroads of bigger metros such as Birmingham, Nashville and Atlanta.

Before Chattanooga was known as the Gig City for its world-class, high-speed internet system. Before it was called the Scenic City because of its mountain vistas and green river valley. Way back in the early 20th century, more than 100 years ago, the city’s nickname was the Dynamo of Dixie — a loose translation would be “powerhouse of the South.” A dynamo was technically an electric generator used in industry.

The metaphor is still apt today as Chattanooga is known far and wide for its energetic vibe — which powers a region that’s at the crossroads of bigger metros such as Birmingham, Nashville and Atlanta.

Just take a look at what others are saying about us:

“This funky town on the river has a huge arts scene and, with that, a more welcoming, diverse environment than other Southern cities,” notes USA Today.

“Chattanooga offers all the entertainment of city living, while its location in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains lends itself to plenty of outdoor adventures,” says Travel + Leisure magazine.

Such accolades are commonplace for 21st century Chattanooga, which has become a magnet for new residents. The city also has developed its own gravity for keeping long-time residents from moving away.

“My Chattanooga” is a yearly relocation guide geared to helping newcomers get their bearings and to introduce unfamiliar parts of the city to people who already live here. Inside these pages you’ll find profiles of 21 neighborhoods and communities with capsule reports on schools, shopping, restaurants, news headlines and more.

In the front of the publication look for features on Chattanooga’s largest local employers, quotes from travel writers (like those above), a guide to attractions and a fact sheet about the metro area itself.

And throughout the publication, see scores of photos from our archives that illustrate what a wonderful place Chattanooga is to live and work in.

Whether you’re here for the technology, the natural beauty or the dynamic vibe, please enjoy these pages and consider them evidence that you’ve made a good choice of places to live.
