Mizzou upends Illini
Xavier Pinson and Dru Smith scored 17 points apiece to lead a balanced attack, and Missouri won the annual ‘‘ Braggin’ Rights’’ game with an 81- 78 upset of No. 6 Illinois on Saturday in Columbia, Missouri.
Ayo Dosunmu scored a career- high 36 points for the Illini ( 4- 2), who trailed by eight points at halftime and by 11 with 6: 53 left before storming back to tie the score at 76 with 3: 21 left. They never could get over the hump, however.
Kofi Cockburn added 19 points and Andre Curbelo 14 for Illinois, which lost despite shooting 52.7%. Javon Pickett added 14 points for the Tigers ( 5- 0), who won despite committing 18 turnovers.
† Nate Laszewski scored 21 points and Prentiss Hubb 18, and Notre Dame ( 2- 2) squandered most of a 22- point halftime lead before holding on for a 64- 63 victory against Kentucky ( 1- 4) in Lexington, Kentucky. The Wildcats have lost four games in a row.
† No. 2 Baylor paused team activities indefinitely because of COVID- 19 issues.
NFL Report: QB Jones to start for Giants
ESPN, citing a source it didn’t identify, reported Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will start Sunday against the Cardinals after sitting last week against the Seahawks with a hamstring injury. Jones officially is listed as questionable, but ESPN reported he passed a final test Saturday.
† Multiple outlets reported the Panthers are expected to hand out fines of at least $ 10,000 to players who broke COVID- 19 protocols during their bye week. An investigation found some players gathered outside of the team’s facility in violation of the NFL’s coronavirus rules.
† Lions defensive end Everson Griffen and Dolphins leading rusher Myles Gaskin were put on the COVID- 19 list by their teams.
GOLF Shibuno leads U. S. Women’s Open by one
Hinako Shibuno struggled to a 3- over- par 74 but maintained her lead after the third round of the U. S. Women’s Open in Houston. Shibuno completed 54 holes at 4- under- par 209, one stroke better than Amy Olson, who managed an even- par 71 in rainy conditions.
† Laurie Canter shot a 4- under 68, Matt Fitzpatrick a 3- under 69 and Patrick Reed a 1- under 71 to share the lead at 11- under 205 after three rounds of World Tour Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
SOCCER Crew capture MLS Cup
Lucas Zelarayan scored twice, and the Crew won their first MLS Cup since 2008 with a 3- 0 victory against the defending champion Sounders in Columbus, Ohio.
