CATS ROLL BEHIND 411 RUSHING YARDS

-

Michael Carter and Javonte Williams set a FBS record by combining for 544 yards rushing, and No. 20 North Carolina embarrassed No. 9 Miami 62- 26 on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida, in the regular- season finale for both teams.

Carter ran for 308 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams had 236 yards and three touchdowns for the Tar Heels ( 8- 3, 7- 3 ACC). It was the seventh time that two teammates each ran for at least 200 yards, the first since 2016 and the first such instance in ACC history.

“Remarkable,” North Carolina coach Mack Brown said.

“Humiliating,” Miami coach Manny Diaz said.

There were many numbers, all of them bad for Miami ( 8- 2, 7- 2). The combined total by Carter and Williams topped the NCAA’s FBS record for teammates, set on Nov. 30 when Jaret Patterson ( 409) and Kevin Marks ( 97) rushed for 506 for Buffalo against Kent State.

North Carolina finished with 778 yards — the most ever yielded by Miami and a Tar Heels record — and 554 yards rushing, also the most allowed in Hurricanes history. Sam Howell threw for a score, ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass for the Tar Heels. It was the first instance of a UNC player doing that since 2014, and it almost became an ancillary note given how Carter and Williams played.

“We’re just in a moment now,” Carter said. “Something that nobody ever did before. It’s a blessing.”

It was the third- most points allowed in Miami history, the most since 66 by Syracuse in 1998. The record is 70 by Texas A& M in 1944.

LSU 37, Florida 34

Cade York kicked a 57- yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining as reigning national champion LSU ( 4- 5) stunned the No. 6 Gators. Florida kicker Evan McPherson had a chance to tie it, but was wide left from 51 yards on the final play.

LSU quarterback Max Johnson, son of former NFL QB Brad Johnson, threw for 239 yards and three touchdown passes in his first college start and ran for 52 more.

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask ( 29- for- 47, 474 yards, two interceptions) ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more, including his record- setting 40th of the season, passing 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel for the most in a single season in school history. Kadarius Toney had 184 yards receiving and Jacob Copeland had 123 for the Gators ( 8- 2).

USC 43, UCLA 38

Kedon Slovis threw an eight- yard touchdown to Amon- Ra St. Brown with 16 seconds left for his fifth passing touchdown of the game to lead the No. 16 Trojans ( 5- 0), who trailed by 18 in the third quarter.

UCLA ( 3- 3) had taken a 38- 36 lead with 52 seconds left on Nicholas Barr- Mira’s 43- yard field goal.

Gary Bryant returned the kickoff 63 yards to the Bruins’ 43, Slovis connected with Tyler Vaughns on a 35- yard reception and St. Brown caught his second touchdown of the game on the next play.

Slovis completed 30 of 47 passes for 344 yards with two touchdowns to St. Brown and Drake London.

Army 15, Navy 0

Army scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, including a fouryard touchdown run by Tyhier Tyler, in the first meeting of the rivals at West Point since 1943. The Black Knights ( 8- 2) posted their first shutout in the series since a 27- 0 victory in 1969 and have won four of five against Navy ( 3- 7), which came in on a four- game skid.

The game featured only eight passes, including only one by Army.
