Alabama holds on to win SEC title

-

Najee Harris scored five touchdowns and No. 1 Alabama advanced to the College Football Playoff with a perfect record, holding off No. 11 Florida in a 52- 46 shootout for the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday night in Atlanta.

The Crimson Tide ( 11- 0, No. 1 CFP) got their toughest test in a season of blowouts, but Harris’ record- setting performance will send coach Nick Saban to the playoff in search of his seventh national title.

After falling behind 35- 17 by halftime, Florida ( 8- 3, No. 7 CFP) made a game of it.

Harris hauled in five passes for 67 yards, including touchdown plays of 23, 17 and seven yards in Alabama’s first- half blitz. Harris rushed for 178 yards on 31 carries.

The two quarterbacks, Alabama’s Mac Jones and Florida’s Kyle Trask, also had big nights. Jones completed 33 of 43 passes for 418 yards and five touchdowns. Smith, as usual, was his favorite receiver with 15 catches for 184 yards and two scores.

Trask was 26- for- 40 for 408 yards and three TDs.

Oklahoma 27, Iowa State 21

Spencer Rattler threw a 45- yard touchdown pass to Marvin Mims and ran for a score and No. 12 Oklahoma won its sixth consecutive Big 12 title, holding on to beat No. 8 Iowa State in Arlington, Texas. That impressive title streak probably won’t be enough to get the Sooners ( 8- 2, No. 10 CFP) into the College Football Playoff for the fourth year in a row, even when paired with their seven- game winning streak.

Big 12 rushing leader Breece Hall ran for two touchdowns for the Cyclones ( 8- 3, No. 6 CFP) in the second half.

Texas A& M 34, Tennessee 13

Kellen Mond threw for 281 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 59 yards and a score, helping the No. 5 Aggies ( 8- 1) close their case for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Rose Bowl heads to Dallas

The College Football Playoff semifinal scheduled to be played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on Jan. 1 is moving to the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium in Arlington, Texas. College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said Saturday night that the CFP management committee and Tournament of Roses mutually agreed to relocate the game because of the growing number of COVID- 19 cases in Southern California.
