Report: Jaguars set to hire Meyer

-

Urban Meyer, who retired after leading Ohio State to a victory in the 2019 Rose Bowl, might be getting back into coaching,

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Saturday said the Jaguars are expected to fire coach Doug Marrone soon after Sunday’s season finale against the Colts and are pursuing Meyer as his replacement.

Meyer, 56, has never coached in the NFL. He has a 187- 32 record in 17 seasons as a college head coach at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State, winning three national championships, in 2006 and 2008 with Florida and in 2014 with the Buckeyes.

Rapoport reported Meyer, who’s with Fox Sports, is assembling a staff and telling associates he expects to get the Jaguars’ job.

The Jaguars ( 1- 14) have lost 14 straight and are 23- 42 under

Marrone in five years.

Jets’ Gase on way out?

According to another NFL Network report by Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Jets will fire coach Adam Gase after Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

The Jets have won two straight after an 0- 13 start and are 9- 22 under Gase in two seasons. Gase was the Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2015 before going 23- 25 in three seasons as the Dolphins’ coach from 2016 to ’ 18.

Saints short on RBs

As a result of star Alvin Kamara’s positive COVID- 19 test, the Saints’ fellow running backs also will miss Sunday’s game against the Panthers because of close contact with Kamara that put the other backs at high risk, according to Fox Sports and ESPN.

Saints backs Latavius Murray, Dwayne Washington, Michael Burton and running backs coach Joel Thomas will be unavailable.

Ty Montgomery, who mostly plays receiver and is on special teams, will take over at running back for the Saints, and a practice- squad player also will be promoted, according to Fox Sports.

Kamara tested positive for coronavirus Thursday before being put on the reserve/ COVID- 19 list Friday.

More Steelers sitting out

The Steelers put cornerback Joe Haden, tight end Eric Ebron and reserve linebacker Cassius Marsh on the reserve/ COVID- 19 list, putting their status for the playoffs in jeopardy.

Previously, the Steelers announced quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, outside linebacker T. J.

Watt, defensive end Cam Heyward, center Maurkice Pouncey will not make the trip to Cleveland to play the Browns Sunday. Kicker Chris Boswell and safety Terrell Edmunds also are out because of injury.

Romo to miss broadcast

Tony Romo will not be in the CBS broadcast booth on the final day of the regular season after being sidelined by “COVID- 19 protocols,” the network said. CBS Sports posted the news on its “CBS Sports PR” Twitter feed on Saturday afternoon. No other information was provided.

The network said Boomer Esiason, who normally is in CBS’ New York studio for “The NFL Today,” will team with Jim Nantz at SoFi Stadium calling the Cardinals- Rams game.
