Baez goes deep in Mets debut

-

Javy Baez homered in his Mets debut Saturday, a two-run shot that energized the home crowd in a 5-4, 10-inning victory Saturday against the Reds.

Baez, whom the Mets got Friday in a trade with the Cubs, launched a pitch from Wade Miley to left field in the sixth inning for his 23rd home run of the season, trimming the Mets’ deficit to 4-3.

Baez took a long look at his drive at home plate before tossing his bat aside and circling the bases. With the fans chanting his name, Baez came out of the dugout for a curtain call and raised both arms to spur on the crowd.

In addition to his homer, Baez grounded out and struck out twice.

Rizzo leads Yankees again

Anthony Rizzo homered for the second consecutive game since being traded by the Cubs on Thursday, scored three runs and reached base in all five of his plate appearances in the Yankees’ 4-2 victory against the host Marlins.

Rizzo was hit by a pitch and scored in the second inning, walked in the third, singled and scored in the fifth, homered in the seventh and walked in the ninth. In two games with the Yankees, he is 4-for-5 with two homers and five runs scored.

Before the game, the Marlins said manager Don Mattingly — who was vaccinated in April — tested positive for COVID-19 and will be away from the team indefinitely. Bench coach James Rowson will manage the team during Mattingly’s absence.

Brewers have two more COVID cases

The Brewers said relievers Jake Cousins and Hunter Strickland tested positive for COVID-19 and will be put in quarantine. A third reliever, Jandel Gustave, missed the team’s game against the Braves in Atlanta because of contact tracing.

They are the latest cases to affect the National League Central-leading Brewers. Earlier in the week, outfielder Christian Yelich tested positive and was showing mild symptoms and utility player Jace Peterson was sidelined because of contact tracing.

Injury report

Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow is expected to have Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow next week after attempts to rehabilitate a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament didn’t relieve the pain. The surgery would keep him out for the rest of this season and likely all of next season, too.

† The Padres put star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list after he partially dislocated his left shoulder for the third time this season while sliding into third base Friday.
