Yankees pound Twins for ninth straight win
Gerrit Cole pitched six scoreless innings, leading the Yankees to their season-high ninth consecutive win with a 7-1 victory over the Twins on Saturday in New York.
Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run double during a five-run fifth, helping the Yankees move to 21-5 since dropping three of four at Boston in late July. Cole (12-6) allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one.
Jorge Polanco homered for the Twins, who are 2-17 in their last 19 games at Yankee Stadium. Kenta Maeda (6-5) allowed five runs in 4„ innings before exiting with right forearm tightness.
The series finale scheduled for Sunday was postponed and rescheduled for Sept. 13 with Hurricane Henri set to hit the area.
Brewers 9, Nationals 6
Christian Yelich homered twice and drove in six runs, powering Milwaukee to the win.
Yelich hit a solo homer in the first, an RBI single in the fifth and a grand slam in the eighth.
His slam gave the Brewers a 9-4 lead. Washington scored two in the ninth, but left the bases loaded.
Braves 4, Orioles 3
Austin Riley put Atlanta ahead for good with a homer in the fifth inning as the team stretched its winning streak to eight games and handed Baltimore its 17th consecutive defeat.
Joc Pederson also homered for the Braves, who have won 15 of 17 and have peeled off 12 consecutive road wins, a single-season franchise record.
Dodgers 4, Mets 3
Trea Turner, Albert Pujols and Chris Taylor homered, and Los Angeles won its ninth consecutive game, matching its season-best streak. Six of those wins have come against the Mets, who have dropped eight of nine overall.
Dodgers right-hander Max Scherzer (11-4) struck out eight while pitching five innings of one-run ball.
Reds 7, Marlins 4
Nick Castellanos hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs as Cincinnati won for the fifth time in seven games. Tyler Naquin hit three doubles and scored three times. The Reds began the day in a tie with the Padres for the second NL wild card spot.
Giants 6, Athletics 5
Pinch hitter LaMonte Wade Jr. connected for a two-run homer in the ninth inning, helping San Francisco rally for the win. Kris Bryant, Brandon Belt and Darin Ruf also homered for the Giants, who trailed 5-2 after six innings.
Astros 15, Mariners 1
Rookie Taylor Jones had a career-high four RBI and Yordan Alvarez hit a three-run homer, powering Houston to the runaway win.
Trout still aims to return this season
Mike Trout says he still is aiming to return to the Angels’ lineup this season despite a lengthy and frustrating recovery from a calf injury that has sidelined him since May 17.
