Wolves in control of series

Josh Leivo and CJ Smith scored less than two minutes apart late in the first period, Alex Lyon made 15 saves and the Wolves beat the IceHogs 4-1 to open a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five Calder Cup playoff series at Allstate Arena.

Max Lajoie and Vasili Ponomarev also scored for the Wolves, who will go for a series sweep Sunday in Rockford.

† Nicholas Paul scored twice, Andrei Vasilevski­y made 30 saves and the visiting Lightning continued their quest for a Stanley Cup three-peat with a 2-1 victory against the Maple Leafs in Game 7 to capture the firstround playoff series 4-3.

† Max Domi had two goals and an assist, former Blackhawks goalie Antti Raanta made 27 saves and the host Hurricanes beat the Bruins 3-2 in Game 7 to win their firstround playoff series 4-3.

† Penguins star Sidney Crosby (reported concussion) took part in the team’s optional practice, but there was no word about whether he would play in Game 7 of the first-round playoff series Sunday against the visiting Rangers.

Djokovic earns milestone victory

Novak Djokovic joined Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafael Nadal as the only men’s players in the Open era (since 1968) with 1,000 career singles victories by defeating Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Italian Open in Rome.

Munoz leads Spieth by one in Nelson

Sebastian Munoz shot a 6-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Jordan Spieth into the final round of the Byron Nelson in suburban Dallas. Munoz completed 54 holes at 21-under 195.

Herta wins IndyCar race

Colton Herta darted to the inside of Pato O’Ward on a late restart, took the lead for good with nine laps to go and beat Simon Pagenaud to the finish line by 3.0983 seconds to win the IndyCar Grand Prix in Indianapol­is.
