Yankees push streak to nine

Jameson Taillon and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, Aaron Hicks lined a three-run double and the Yankees extended their winning streak to nine by beating the Jays 4-0 on Saturday in Toronto.

Taillon (8-1) allowed four hits and struck out eight in 5‰ innings to win his eighth straight decision. Michael King worked two innings, and Clay Holmes got the final four outs. The Yankees pitched their 11th shutout of the season and improved to a major-league-best 49-16.

Alek Manoah (8-2) lost for the first time in 16 career home starts, disappoint­ing a sellout crowd of 45,055.

Brewers DFA Cain after he reaches 10 years

On the same day that Lorenzo Cain, 36, reached 10 years of major-league service, the Brewers designated the two-time All-Star outfielder for assignment. He hit .179 with one home run and nine RBI in 43 games.

“It just got to a point where it’s probably time,” Cain told reporters in Cincinnati. “I haven’t been performing like I would’ve liked.”

Cain is in the last year of a five-year, $80 million contract he signed in January 2018 as a free agent. The Brewers are responsibl­e for the $10,897,121 remaining of this season’s $18 million salary. He’s unlikely to be claimed off waivers because of that.

Dodgers’ Betts out with cracked rib

Dodgers star Mookie Betts is headed to the injured list with a cracked right rib. Manager Dave Roberts announced Betts’ diagnosis after the team’s 7-1 victory over the Guardians. Betts is tied for third in the majors with 53 runs scored and has 17 home runs, which is tied for fourth in the NL.

Red-hot Phillies top Nationals in 10 innings

Pinch hitter Rhys Hoskins singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and the visiting Phillies beat the Nationals 2-1 for their 15th win in 17 games. The Phillies are a season-high five games over .500 and 14-2 since firing manager Joe Girardi on June 3.

Walker, Lindor help keep Mets rolling

Taijuan Walker retired 18 in a row and pitched into the seventh, Francisco Lindor homered for the second consecutiv­e game and the Mets edged the visiting Marlins 3-2. The Mets have won three in a row and five of six, earning their NL-best 44th victory.
