John D. McBride, 83, Oak Park, formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Monday, June 20. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Ward McBride, who preceded him in death; the loving father of Suzanne McBride (John O’Neill) and Jim (Sharon) McBride; and dear grandfathe­r of Grace O’Neill, Jack O’Neill and Aidan McBride. He was the adored brother of Suzanne Feldmann and brother-in-law of Richard (Lydia) Ward. He is also survived by his nieces Lorelei McDermott, Angela McBride, Jeanne Kaczor and Margie Lindsey, and nephews Joe Feldmann, Richard Ward and John Ward. Also dear to him was close family friend Caitlin Hanley. Born in Chicago to Dorothy Burgess McBride, John graduated from Loyola Academy and John Carroll University. After a short stint at Harvard University Law School, John earned a doctorate in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as a master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa. John was a college professor at the University of Michigan and worked in administra­tion at the University of Iowa before leading social service agencies in eastern Iowa. John was a published poet who won numerous state and local poetry contests, and he had a lovely voice, singing in the church choir and at family gatherings, often with his niece Lorelei. He will be deeply missed. Special thanks for the wonderful care provided by Mary, Millie, Sharon, Mabel and Michelle of Home Instead. His mother Dorothy, sister Mary Rose, brother Joe, and nieces Cynthia Betts and Terry Brennan preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Monday, June 27 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Ascension Church, 808 S. East Ave., Oak Park. Mass will be held at 11 a.m. in the church, with burial at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N. River Road, Des Plaines.
