Eagle helps Poston build three-shot lead in Deere
J.T. Poston made up for two back-nine bogeys with an eagle on the par-5 17th, shooting a 4-under 67 on Saturday to take a threestroke lead into the final round of the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois.
Trying to complete a wire-to-wire victory after tying for second last week in the Travelers, Poston made a 13½-foot eagle putt on 17.
“[The eagle] was huge going into tomorrow,” said Poston, who has carded a 19-under 194 total at TPC Deere Run. “I wasn’t quite as sharp today off the tee and had to play a little defensive into some of the greens.”
Denny McCarthy birdied the final two holes for a 66 to join Scott Stallings (64) and Emiliano Grillo (65) at 16 under.

Cornet puts end to Swiatek’s streak
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek was unbeaten since February, compiling 37 consecutive match wins and six consecutive tournament titles. But her streak ended in a mistakefilled performance that sent Swiatek out of Wimbledon in the third round with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to 37th-ranked Alize Cornet.
Swiatek never has been quite as comfortable on grass courts as other surfaces, and she committed 33 unforced errors — a whopping 26 more than Cornet during the onesided 1-hour, 33-minute encounter.
“I was pretty confused about my tactics,” said Swiatek, who never has advanced past the fourth round at the All England Club.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas grew frustrated by what he called a “circus” atmosphere and “bullying” tactics by Nick Kyrgios, who cursed and argued his way to a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7) victory.
