Rybakina tops Jabeur for Wimbledon women’s title

-

Elena Rybakina became the first player from Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam singles championship when she rallied to defeat third-seeded Ons Jabeur 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s final Saturday at Wimbledon.

Rybakina, who was seeded 17th, was born in Russia but has been playing for Kazakhstan since 2018, when that country offered her funding to support her career. The switch has been a topic of conversation at Wimbledon, which barred all players who represent Russia and Belarus from playing in the tournament because of the war in Ukraine.

Jabeur, who is from Tunisia, was trying to become the first player from Africa to win a Grand Slam singles title. She won the first set comfortably before falling victim to Rybakina’s big serves and groundstrokes.

It was the first Wimbledon women’s final since 1962 in which both players were making their debuts in a major final.
