DePaul fights back, but skid reaches 10

DePaul threw a scare into No. 10 Marquette on Saturday, rallying from a 21-point deficit at halftime before falling 90-84 in Big East action in Milwaukee. It was the Blue Demons’ 10th consecutiv­e loss.

Umoja Gibson made four three-pointers and scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures for DePaul (9-20, 3-15), which trailed 49-28 at halftime before outscoring the Golden Eagles (23-6, 15-3) after the break.

Kam Jones, who was celebratin­g his 21st birthday, and Tyler Kolek each scored 22 points to help Marquette clinch a share of its first Big East regular-season championsh­ip since 2013. Kolek also had 14 assists for the Golden Eagles, who won for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

The Blue Demons cut Marquette’s lead to 78-72 on a three-pointer by Gibson with 3:18 left and got their deficit down to four with 15 seconds left, but they couldn’t keep Kolek off the free-throw line down the stretch. Kolek was 9-for-10 on free-throw attempts in the final 2:04.

‘‘[We have] a resilient group, but you just can’t dig yourself a 21-point hole on the road against a team as good as Marquette,’’ DePaul coach Tony Stubblefie­ld said. ‘‘You have to exert so much energy to even get back in the game that it’s really hard to overcome.’’

Nick Ongenda added 16 points to go with 12 rebounds, Eral Penn 11 and Zion Cruz and Caleb Murphy 10 each for the Blue Demons.

Saint Louis 81, Loyola 62

Gibson Jimerson scored 21 points, Yuri Collins handed out 11 assists and the Billikens (19-10, 11-5 Atlantic 10) limited the Ramblers (9-19, 3-13) to 6-for-22 shooting from threepoint range in St. Louis.

Philip Alston had 15 points, Ben Schwieger 12 points and seven rebounds and Braden Norris 11 points for Loyola, which trailed by 16 points at halftime and never made a serious run in the second half.

Wake Forest 66, Notre Dame 58

Tyree Appleby scored 21, points, and the Demon Deacons (18-11, 10-8 ACC) overcame 35.6% shooting from the field by making 12 three-pointers on their way to defeating the Irish (10-19, 2-16) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Ven-Allen Lubin had 19 points and eight rebounds and Trey Wertz and Cormac Ryan 12 points apiece for Notre Dame, which shot 39.6% and lost its seventh game in a row.

Indiana 79, Purdue 71

Jalen Hood-Schifino scored a career-high 35 points, and the No. 17 Hoosiers (20-9, 11-7 Big Ten) held the No. 5 Boilermake­rs (24-5, 13-5) to 34.9% shooting from the field in West Lafayette, Indiana, to complete a season sweep.

Zach Edey had 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead Purdue, which lost for the fourth time in its last six games and failed to clinch at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

Iowa 112, Michigan State 106

Kris Murray scored 26 points, Tony Perkins 24 and Payton Sandfort 22, and the Hawkeyes (18-11, 10-8 Big Ten) shot 6-for-9 from three-point range in the last 1:34 of regulation to wipe out a 13-point deficit and force overtime on their way to stunning the Spartans (17-11, 9-8) in Iowa City. Michigan State, which got a season-high 31 points from Tyson Walker, led 91-78 with 1:34 left.

Nebraska 78, Minnesota 67

Sam Griesel led six players in double figures with 19 points, and the Cornhusker­s (15-14, 8-10 Big Ten) continued their late-season surge by defeating the Golden Gophers (7-20, 1-16) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
