Sky drops season finale against Lynx

-

Seventeen points and 11 rebounds by Sylvia Fowles and 14 points from Elena Delle Donne weren’t enough to keep the Sky from losing for just the second time in 11 games Saturday — a 79-66 loss to the Minnesota Lynx in the regular-season finale in Minneapolis.

Maya Moore had 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Lynx (26-8) secured home-court advantage throughout the WNBA playoffs by winning for the eighth time in their last nine. Lindsay Whalen added 23 points for the Lynx.

The Sky (24-10) is the top seed in the Eastern Conference in its first postseason appearance and will face either the Indiana Fever or Washington Mystics in the conference semifinals.

Courtney Vandersloot scored six points during an 11-4 run in the third quarter that got the Sky within six. The Sky closed to 71-61 midway through the fourth, but Seimone Augustus scored four straight and Rachel Jarry hit a jumper to put the Lynx in front by 16.

Miyazato has thin edge at Evian

With teen amateur Lydia Ko of New Zealand in pursuit, Mika Mi- yazato of Japan held a one-stroke lead after two rounds at the Evian Championship, the fifth and last women’s major of the year in EvianLes-Baines, France.

Miyazato bogeyed on the first two holes but shot a 2-under 69 and was at 8 under with a round to go. She’s looking for her first U.S. LPGA title this year.

Ko, 16, had four birdies in an error-free 4-under 67.

The four-round tournament was cut to 54 holes after rain left the greens soggy.

Eight-week IR for Jets’ Sanchez

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has been put on short-term injured reserve, meaning he won’t be able to play for the next eight weeks while he recovers from an injured right shoulder.

Sanchez was hurt after replacing rookie Geno Smith in the Jets’ third preseason game against the New York Giants and has opted to try to rehabilitate the injury rather than have season-ending surgery.

† Emirates Team New Zealand nearly capsized in Race 8 of the America’s Cup, allowing defending champion Oracle Team USA to sail away to a 52-second victory on windy San Francisco Bay.

It was just the second victory of the series for the American syndicate, which has erased the twopoint penalty it was assessed in the biggest cheating scandal in the 162-year-history of the America’s Cup. Team New Zealand leads 6-0.
