2 shot by police in less than an hour on S. Side

-

A person was shot to death by Chicago Police officers while trying to drive away from a traffic stop in the South Shore neighborhood, marking the city’s second officer-involved shooting in less than an hour Thursday night on the South Side, police said.

About 7:30 p.m., officers in the 7400 block of South Merrill pulled over a Jaguar convertible that had been reported stolen earlier in the day from southwest suburban Bolingbrook, according to CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

The Jaguar was blocked by at least two police vehicles, but the driver tried to take off, side-swiping one squad car and crashing into a parked vehicle, Guglielmi said.

Two officers then opened fire, police said.

The person shot, a male whose age was unknown, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died, police said.

Another person in the car was arrested and was being questioned Thursday night, police said.

An unspecified number of injured officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac. It wasn’t immediately clear what their injuries were, but they were not shot, Sissac said.

The officers were wearing body cameras, and the police vehicles at the scene had their cameras activated, Guglielmi said.

In Englewood, just before 7 p.m., a robbery suspect was shot by Chicago Police.

About 6:50 p.m., officers were called to a robbery in the 6700 block of South May, according to a CPD statement and Sissac.

A 24-year-old man pointed officers to a man he said had robbed him, police said. They chased the suspect down a gangway and saw a weapon in his hand, police said.

The officers told him to drop it and shot him twice in “the lower extremities” when he didn’t, police said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Investigators recovered a weapon, police said.
