Mets let another get away

-

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia stumbled for a second consecutive game, allowing two runs in the ninth inning as the visiting Colorado Rockies earned a 2-1 victory Thursday.

Less than 24 hours after Familia’s streak of 52 consecutive regular-season saves was snapped, he entered with a 1-0 lead in the ninth and couldn’t hold it.

Trevor Story had a leadoff single and stole second. After David Dahl walked, Daniel Descalso bunted up the first-base line. Mets catcher Rene Rivera watched as the ball spun toward foul territory, but it stopped fair, loading the bases with no outs.

With one out, Familia (2-3) got pinch hitter Cristhian Adames to hit a slow grounder to the right side. First baseman James Loney booted the ball, and Story scored to make it 1-1. Familia then threw a wild pitch, allowing Dahl to score the go-ahead run.

Aledmys Diaz homered, doubled and drove in three runs against childhood friend Jose Fernandez (12-5) to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory against the host Miami Marlins.

The game marked the return of Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon from an 80-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. He went 0-for-4.

The San Francisco Giants bolstered their injury-ravaged infield by acquiring Eduardo Nuñez from the Minnesota Twins for minor-league pitcher Adalberto Mejia. Nunez was hitting .296 with 12 home runs, 47 RBI and an American League-leading 27 stolen bases.

Robert Griffin III is expected to win the starting job over veteran Josh McCown and rookie Cody Kessler. The Browns signed Griffin to a twoyear, $15 million contract in March.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones was pulled out of practice on the first day of training camp with what coach Dan Quinn described as a ‘‘little tweak.’’ Quinn wouldn’t say what Jones hurt but said he expected him to be cleared for practice Friday.

The NFL said the ‘‘Monday Night Football’’ game Nov. 21 between the Oakland Raiders and Houston Texans in Mexico City sold out in less than a half-hour.
