Robin not expecting much trade activity

- BY DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN Staff Reporter

White Sox manager Robin Ventura is familiar with rumors around the trade deadline, and this season is no different. The Sox are hovering around .500 and are long shots to make the playoffs.

‘‘Everybody’s been part of it, and we have some guys people want,’’ Ventura said. ‘‘This week probably led to some more phone calls from people calling to see what’s going on with us.’’

‘‘This week’’ involved the aftermath of general manager Rick Hahn saying the Sox would be open to all possibilities, including rebuilding, and ace Chris Sale’s zany uniform-cutting caper that got him suspended for five games and raised speculation he might be available if Hahn were to be overwhelmed by an offer.

Ventura said he’s not expecting much on the trade front, but stay tuned.

‘‘I don’t want to see anybody go out of here,’’ Ventura said. ‘‘I don’t think that’s going to happen. We’ll go from there.’’

Ranaudo returned to Charlotte

A day after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and hitting a home run in the Sox’ 8-1 loss to the Cubs, right-hander Anthony Ranaudo was returned to Class AAA Charlotte. The Sox needed to make room on the active roster for Sale, who returned from the suspended list.

The Sox want to keep Ranaudo, who pitched much better in his one start than right-hander Jacob Turner did in two as a replacement for injured lefthander Carlos Rodon, on a starter’s routine at Charlotte. He was 6-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 16 starts between Charlotte and Round Rock, the Rangers’ Class AAA affiliate, before the Sox called him up.

The Sox might need Ranaudo to start again if they trade someone from the rotation before the deadline Monday.

Rodon (sprained left wrist) likely will start Sunday against the Twins at Target Field, although the Sox haven’t officially announced their starter for that day.

This and that

Left-hander Jose Quintana, who will start Friday against the Twins, is 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA in four starts in July.

The Sox’ month-by-month record: April, 17-8; May, 11-17; June, 12-14; July, 10-12 (as of Wednesday).
