Jets’ Forte expects to play in opener

-

Former Bears running back Matt Forte said Tuesday he’ll ‘‘ definitely’’ be ready to play in the Jets’ regular- season opener against the Bengals despite a hamstring injury that has prevented him from fully practicing during training camp.

Forte, 30, tweaked a hamstring while running on his own before camp opened nearly three weeks ago. But he did participate in individual drills Tuesday, taking handoffs and catching short throws from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

He said he and the Jets are being ‘‘ super, super cautious’’ about the injury.

Forte, whom the Jets signed as a free agent in March after eight seasons with the Bears, said he is uncertain whether he will play in any preseason games.

Bills DT Dareus suspended

The NFL suspended Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus for the first four games of the regular season for violating its substanceabuse policy.

Dareus has been a five- year starter since being selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 draft. The Bills signed him last season to the most expensive contract in team history, a seven- year deal worth a potential $ 104 million.

Chiefs RB Charles off PUP list

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles made his camp debut, but trainer Rick Burkholder downplayed his arrival by calling it ‘‘ part of the process.’’

Charles had been on the physically unable- to- perform list for the first three weeks of camp, spending his time going through rehab with the Chiefs’ training staff. He had surgery last season to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which he tore in Week 5 against the Bears.

Fans sue over missed HoF game

Four fans have sued the NFL over the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, that was canceled because of poor field conditions.

The class- action lawsuit was filed in federal court on behalf of all the ticket holders who lost out when the Aug. 7 game was canceled after paint congealed and hardened on portions of the field. The Pro Football Hall of Fame also was named in the suit.

This and that

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former commissioner Paul Tagliabue have been selected as finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

The Lions removed linebacker DeAndre Levy, who missed almost all of last season because of hip problems, from the non- football injury list.

Former Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, who hasn’t thrown a pass since 2014, signed a one- year deal with the 49ers.

The Dolphins have changed the name of their stadium to Hard Rock Stadium.
