Broncos looking to Siemian at QB

-

Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak on Monday named former Northwestern star Trevor Siemian the starting quarterback for the team’s third preseason game and said he will decide next week who will be under center for the regular- season opener Sept. 8 against the Carolina Panthers.

Kubiak said Siemian, who has been hampered by a sore shoulder, veteran Mark Sanchez and rookie Paxton Lynch will play an equal amount Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who hadn’t thrown during team drills since Aug. 10 because of soreness in his right shoulder, threw against the defense during practice.

Kaepernick is on track to make his preseason debut Friday against the Green Bay Packers. The injury allowed Blaine Gabbert to start the 49ers’ first two preseason games while he competes against Kaepernick for the starting job.

Running back Matt Jones will miss the rest of the preseason with an injury to his left shoulder, but the Washington Redskins hope he will be ready for the regular- season opener Sept. 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coach Jay Gruden said Jones will be held out of the Redskins’ final two preseason games after spraining the shoulder Friday against the New York Jets.

The Indianapolis Colts shored up their injuryfilled secondary by signing 10- year veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Terms of the contract weren’t immediately disclosed.
