LSU’s winning TD comes too late

-

Daniel Carlson kicked six field goals, and Auburn held off No. 18 LSU 18- 13 after officials ruled Danny Etling’s last- gasp touchdown pass to D. J. Shark came after time expired Saturday in Auburn, Alabama.

Etling rolled to his right and found Shark for an apparent 15- yard scoring pass, setting off a celebration by LSU ( 2- 2, 1- 1 Southeastern Conference). But the celebration shifted to Auburn ( 2- 2, 1- 1 SEC) when officials announced the decisive ruling.

Auburn linebacker Tre Williams was ejected for targeting in the second quarter. There was no flag after Williams’ helmet- to- helmet hit knocked Etling out of the game for a play, but a review by the officials determined Williams had led with the crown of his helmet.

Mississippi 45, Georgia 14

Chad Kelly threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a 41- yard score to fuel the No. 23 Rebels to a 45- 14 rout of the No. 12 Bulldogs in Southeastern Conference play in Oxford, Mississippi.

Mississippi ( 2- 2, 1- 1) dominated every phase of the game, building leads of 31- 0 at halftime and 45- 0 midway through the third quarter on its way to breaking a 10- game losing streak at the hands of Georgia ( 3- 1, 1- 1) that dated to 1996.

The Bulldogs lost for the first time under new coach Kirby Smart. To make matters worse, star running back Nick Chubb suffered a sprained left ankle in the second quarter and didn’t return.

Tennessee 38, Florida 28

Joshua Dobbs threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth score — all in the second half — and the No. 14 Volunteers erased a 21- point deficit to defeat the No. 19 Gators and end their 11- game losing streak in the annual series.

Florida ( 3- 1, 1- 1 SEC) built a 21- 0 lead in the second quarter behind two touchdown passes by Austin Appleby, who was playing in place of injured Luke Del Rio ( left knee). But Tennessee ( 4- 0, 1- 0 SEC) scored the next 38 points on its way to defeating the Gators for the first time since a 30- 28 victory in 2004.

Alabama 48, Kent State 0

Jalen Hurts passed for 164 yards and a touchdown and ran for 54 yards and another score, backup tailback Joshua Jacobs scored his first two career touchdowns and the No. 1 Crimson Tide ( 4- 0) steamrolled the Golden Flashes ( 1- 3) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Alabama dominated coach Nick Saban’s alma mater from the start, even scoring on a kickoff return and a touchdown pass to freshman linebacker Mack Wilson. The only bit of bad news for the Crimson Tide was that tailback Damien Harris suffered a sprained right ankle on the first drive and didn’t return.

Stanford 22, UCLA 13

Ryan Burns threw an eight- yard touchdown pass to J. J. ArcegaWhiteside with 24 seconds left, Solomon Thomas returned a fumble 42 yards for a score on the last play of the game and the No. 7 Cardinal ( 3- 0, 2- 0 Pac- 12) rallied to defeat the Bruins ( 2- 2, 0- 1 Pac- 12) for the ninth time in a row in Pasadena, California.
