Falcons win offensive showcase
Tevin Coleman ran for three touchdowns, Matt Ryan passed for two more and Deion Jones returned an interception 90 yards for a score to fuel the visiting Atlanta Falcons to a 45- 32 victory Monday against the New Orleans Saints.
The teams combined for 916 yards of offense, but the Falcons ( 2- 1) had better balance. Devonta Freeman ran 14 times for 152 yards and caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. Coleman ran for touchdowns of two, two and six yards and caught three passes for 47 yards. And Ryan was an efficient 20- for- 30 for 240 yards without an interception.
Drew Brees was 36- for- 54 for 376 yards and three touchdowns for the Saints ( 0- 3), but Jones’ interception return early in the fourth quarter gave the Falcons a 45- 25 lead that proved too much to overcome.
QB Wilson may sit against Jets
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, and coach Pete Carroll raised the possibility of Wilson missing the team’s Week 4 game against the New York Jets.
Carroll acknowledged there is a thought of holding Wilson out Sunday against the Jets with the Seahawks’ bye coming in Week 5.
This and that
San Diego Chargers coach Mike McCoy said former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o will miss the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles tendon suffered Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.
San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis retired from the NFL for a second time because of concussion concerns. He sat out last season for the same reasons before returning this summer.
