Goal- line stand lifts Florida

-

Florida’s defense stopped Derrius Guice on a fourth- down run from the 1- yard line in the final seconds, and the No. 23 Gators held on for a 16- 10 victory Saturday against No. 16 LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to clinch the Southeastern Conference East Division.

The teams scuffled on the field about an hour before the game, which originally was scheduled for Oct. 8 in Gainesville, Florida, but was postponed because of Hurricane Matthew and eventually moved to Baton Rouge.

The stop of Guice capped a defensive struggle in which the Tigers ( 6- 4, 4- 3 SEC) converted a fourth- and- 10 play on their final drive, only to get stopped on backto- back runs from the 1 to end the game. J. D. Moore came up short on third down.

Florida quarterback Austin Apppleby completed only seven passes in 17 attempts, but one of them went for a pivotal 98- yard touchdown to Tyrie Cleveland. Eddy Piniero added three field goals for the Gators ( 8- 2, 6- 2).

LSU outgained Florida 423 yards to 270, but the Tigers three times failed to score after driving inside the Gators’ 10, and that proved to be the difference.

Alabama 31, Chattanooga 3

Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes, and the No. 1 Crimson Tide ( 11- 0) held the Mocs ( 8- 3) to 184 yards of total offense on their way to a nonconference victory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The result enabled Alabama to remain the only unbeaten Power Five conference team in the country.

Colorado 38, Washington State 24

Sefo Liufau threw for 345 yards, ran for 108 more and scored three touchdowns to fuel the No. 10 Buffaloes ( 9- 2, 7- 1) past the No. 22 Cougars ( 8- 3, 7- 1) in a battle of Pac- 12 division leaders. Luke Falk passed for 325 yards and three touchdowns for Washington State, which had its eight- game winning streak broken.

Oregon 30, Utah 28

Justin Herbert connected with Darren Carrington on a 17- yard touchdown pass with two seconds left to boost the Ducks ( 4- 7, 2- 6) to a Pac- 12 upset of the No. 12 Utes ( 8- 3, 5- 3) in Salt Lake City. Carrington initially was called out of bounds, but the call was reversed on review.

Western Michigan 38, Buffalo 0

Zach Terrell passed for a careerhigh 445 yards and four touch- downs, Corey Davis caught 13 passes for 173 yards and two scores and the No. 21 Broncos ( 11- 0, 7- 0) stayed unbeaten by blanking the Bulls ( 2- 9, 1- 6) in Mid- American Conference action in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Kansas 24, Texas 21

Matthew Wyman made a 36- yard field goal with seven seconds left to force overtime, then made a 25- yarder in the extra session as the Jayhawks ( 2- 9, 1- 7) ended a 19- game Big 12 skid by defeating the Longhorns ( 5- 6, 3- 5) in Lawrence, Kansas.
