Loyola overpowers Oral Roberts

Milton Doyle led a balanced attack with 14 points, and Loyola pulled away early en route to a 78- 53 victory Saturday against Oral Roberts in a consolatio­n game at the Paradise Jam Tournament in St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands.

Aundre Jackson added 13 points and Clayton Custer and Ben Richardson 12 each for the Ramblers ( 4- 1), who led 40- 28 at the half and were up by as many as 32 points in the second half.

Loyola, which was coming off a 71- 57 loss Friday to Saint Joseph’s, opened the game with a 17- 5 run to take command and never was threatened seriously after that.

Kris Martin scored 12 points to lead the Golden Eagles ( 1- 3), who shot only 36 percent ( 20- for- 56).

UIC 102, Trinity Christian 66

Tai Odiase scored 20 points on 8- for- 9 shooting, Dikembe Dixson added 18 points and nine rebounds and the Flames ( 2- 1) scored more than 100 points in a game for the first time since 2003 in a victory against the NAIA member Trolls at the Pavilion.

Four other players also scored in double figures for UIC, which shot 56 percent and outrebound­ed Trinity Christian 47- 30.

Duke 78, Penn State 68

Frank Jackson led five players in double figures with 17 points, and the No. 1 Blue Devils ( 3- 1) eased past the Nittany Lions ( 2- 2) in the Hall of Fame Tip- Off Tournament in Uncasville, Connecticu­t. Duke lost forward Chase Jeter to a sprained left ankle in the first half.

Tony Carr scored 20 points and Shep Garner 15 to lead Penn State.

Indiana 87, Liberty 48

James Blackmon Jr. scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds, OG Anunoby added 10 points and 11 rebounds and the No. 6 Hoosiers ( 3- 0) shot 61 percent en route to romping past the Flames ( 1- 2) in Bloomingto­n, Indiana.

No one scored in double figures for Liberty, which shot 30 percent.

Rhode Island 76, Cincinnati 71

E. C. Matthews made two late three- pointers and finished with 18 points to lead four players in double figures, and the No. 21 Rams ( 4- 0) rallied from a 12- point deficit to slip past the No. 24 Bearcats ( 2- 1) in the Hall of Fame TipOff Tournament in Uncasville, Connecticu­t.

Oakland ( Mich.) 107, Chicago State 79

Martez Walker scored 24 points, and the Golden Grizzlies ( 4- 0) used a 52- 32 edge in rebounds to thump the Cougars ( 1- 2) in Rochester, Michigan. Fred Sims Jr. led Chicago State with 17 points.
