Gronkowski out for rest of season with back injury

-

The Patriots put tight end Rob Gronkowski on injured reserve after he had season- ending back surgery, the team said Saturday.

Gronkowski, who missed playing time earlier in the season with a hamstring injury and bruised lung, left the game last Sunday against the Jets in the first half with what was described as a herniated disk in his back. He had surgery Friday.

Gronkowski’s injury was traced to a big hit he took from Seahawks safety Earl Thomas on Nov. 13.

The 2015 All- Pro played in eight games, catching 25 passes for 540 yards and three touchdowns.

The injury leaves the Patriots with Martellus Bennett and Matt Lengel at tight end.

Clowney won’t face Packers

Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is out for the game against the Packers because of elbow and wrist injuries. Clowney, who will be sidelined for the first time this season, has a career- high 12 tackles for losses.

This and that

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol and will play Monday against the Jets.

Jets starting defensive tackle Steve McLendon ( hamstring) and safety Calvin Pryor ( concussion) will miss the game.

The Lions signed wide receiver TJ Jones from their practice squad, and he might play if Marvin Jones ( thigh) is inactive.

Bills tight end Charles Clay did not travel with the team to Oakland because of the expected birth of his child.
