Garrett’s heroics lift DePaul

Billy Garrett Jr. scored seven of his 14 points in the last 28 seconds, and his three- point play with 4.7 seconds left boosted DePaul past Providence 64- 63 in a Big East thriller Tuesday at Allstate Arena.

The Blue Demons ( 8- 9, 1- 3) trailed 63- 61 when the Friars ( 11- 7, 1- 4) turned the ball over on an inbounds play. The ball made its way to Garrett, whomade a reverse layup while being fouled to tie the score. He then made the free throw to give DePaul the decisive point.

Cyrus Brandon and Eli Cain added 10 points apiece for the Demons, who scored 27 points off 20 Providence turnovers. Rodney Bullock scored 18 points to lead the Friars, who squandered a 12- point lead with 8 ½ minutes left.

Maryland 75, Indiana 72

Melo Trimble scored 18 points, and Kevin Huerter made a goahead three- pointer with 1: 46 left to help the Terrapins ( 15- 2, 3- 1) fight off the Hoosiers ( 11- 6, 1- 3) in Big Ten action in College Park, Maryland.

James Blackmon Jr. scored 22 points for disappoint­ing Indiana, which lost for the fourth time in its last five games and finds itself in 12th place in the conference standings.

West Virginia 89, Baylor 68

Nathan Adrian broke out of a slump by scoring a career- high 22 points, and the No. 10 Mountainee­rs ( 14- 2, 3- 1) walloped the No. 1 Bears ( 15- 1, 3- 1) in a Big 12 game in Morgantown, West Virginia. The result left No. 5 Gonzaga as the only unbeaten team in Division I.

Florida State 88, Duke 72

Xavier Rathan- Mayes scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half, and the No. 9 Seminoles ( 16- 1, 4- 0) set a school record with their 12th consecutiv­e victory by drubbing the Blue Devils ( 14- 3, 2- 2) in Atlantic Coast Conference play in Tallahasse­e, Florida. Florida State is 4- 0 in the ACC for the first time.

Villanova 79, Xavier 54

Kris Jenkins and Josh Hart each scored 20 points, and the No. 3 Wildcats ( 16- 1, 4- 1) routed the No. 15 Musketeers ( 13- 3, 3- 1) in Big East action in Villanova, Pennsylvan­ia. Villanova made 15 of its first 20 shots after halftime and outscored Xavier 45- 26 in the second half.

N. Illinois 74, Kent State 70 ( OT)

Marin Maric scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Huskies ( 10- 6, 2- 1) fought back from a 13- point deficit in the second half to slip past the Golden Flashes ( 9- 7, 1- 2) in Mid- American Conference play in Kent, Ohio.
