U. OF I. TRUSTEES ENDORSE PLAN TO HIKE ENROLLMENT BY 15%

-

University of Illinois’ board of trustees on Thursday endorsed an ambitious plan from the system’s president to increase enrollment by nearly 15 percent — to more than 93,600 students — at its three campuses over the next five years.

The effort will expand academic programs and opportunities for Illinois students and minorities as a means of curbing the number of students going out of state for college, University of Illinois President Tim Killeen said. Statistics show 45 percent of Illinois high school graduates enrolled at four- year colleges and universities in 2015 were going to out- of- state institutions, the university said — up from 29 percent in 2002.

The board of trustees also extended a freeze on its base tuition for in- state freshmen for a third consecutive year.
