Hoosiers lose Anunoby for season

- | DARRON CUMMINGS/ AP

Indiana Hoosiers forward OG Anunoby will undergo surgery on his right knee and will miss the rest of the season, coach Tom Crean announced Friday.

“We’ve been in these situations before, but it’s uncharted for this team,” Crean said. “Certainly the Collin Hartman [ knee] injury was hard, but it was in the preseason and they didn’t get to see what Collin brought to this team. But they did get to see what OG brought to this team.”

The 6- 8, 235- pound sophomore was injured late in the first half of the Hoosiers’ victory at Penn State on Wednesday while battling for an offensive rebound.

“It’s been a long couple of days for everybody, hard for him, hard for all of us,” Crean said. “If everything goes as expected, he’ll have a 100 percent recovery.”

Some thought Anunoby might declare for the NBA draft after last season, but he returned and was averaging 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Indiana ( 13- 6, 3- 3 Big Ten) hosts Michigan State ( 12- 7, 4- 2) on Saturday.

MISCELLANEOUS Serena wins easily

Second- seeded Serena Williams had little trouble dispatching fellow American Nicole Gibbs 6- 1, 6- 3 in only 63 minutes in the third round of the Australian Open. The six- time Australian champion advanced to the fourth round for the sixth year in a row since not playing here in 2011 due to a foot injury. Aiming for a record 23rd Grand Slam singles title, Williams will next playNo. 16 Barbora Strycova, who beat Caroline Garcia in straight sets.

On the men’s side, third- round winners included top seed Andy Murray and No. 17 Roger Federer, who knocked off No. 10 Tomas Berdych.

Samuel Blais and Ivan Barbashev scored goals in the second period but they weren’t enough as the visiting Wolves lost 3- 2 to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Ville Husso made 33 saves in net for the Wolves ( 23- 14- 3- 2) after Pheonix Copley was recalled by the St. Louis Blues.

In his first tournament since returning from two sports hernia surgeries, Phil Mickelson shot a 6- under 66 in the second round at the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California. He remains four strokes behind leader Hudson Swafford.
