SOX 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

- — Daryl Van Schouwen

Hero for a second day

Utility player Leury Garcia, who drove in four runs Tuesday against the Reds, bounced an RBI single off the left- field wall in the ninth inning to lift the Sox past the Diamondbacks.

Garcia’s heroics were set up by Courtney Hawkins’ hit- andrun single to right that sent prospect Micker Adolfo to third. Garcia came through after Jacob May and Rymer Liriano struck out.

Shields’ first start

Operation ‘‘ Put 2016 in the Past’’ began in earnest for right- hander James Shields, who turned in a decent twoinning outing in his first spring start. Shields, 35, allowed a run and two hits, struck out two and walked none.

‘‘ One of the best attributes for a baseball player is to have amnesia,’’ said Shields, who is focusing on commanding his fastball. ‘‘ So far, so good.’’

Shields bluntly was asked what happened to him last season, when he went 6- 19 with a 5.85 ERA.

‘‘ There’s no rhyme or reason,’’ he said. ‘‘ I think my delivery was out of whack. My ball was flat. For the most part, I was up in the zone. There were a lot of combinations of things. But we addressed that at the end of the season last year, we’re addressing it right now and we’re moving forward.’’

Delmonico goes deep

Infielder Nicky Delmonico, who hit .279 with 17 home runs and 30 doubles in 110 games between Class AA and Class AAA last season, singled, walked and homered.

‘‘ He’s put himself on the map,’’ hitting coach Todd Steverson said before the game.
