CUBS 7, WHITE SOX 3
Rough start for Holland
Left- hander Derek Holland breezed through the first seven hitters in the Cubs’ regular lineup, then walked lefties TommyLa Stella and Jon Jay before the left- handed- hitting Kyle Schwarber belted a threerun home run.
‘‘ I was upset with the lefties, two walks,’’ said Holland, who was charged with six runs, four hits and three walks.
Other than that, Holland said he was OK with his outing.
‘‘ This is spring,’’ he said. ‘‘ This is where we work on stuff. Once the games hit, it’s a different animal.’’
SpecialK
Right- hander MichaelKopech, one of the prospects acquired in the Chris Sale trade, struck out five in two scoreless innings. Among Kopech’s strikeout victims were Jason Heyward, La Stella, Jay and Ian Happ.
The Cubs brought the first spring sellout for the Sox at Camelback Ranch, and Kopech fed off the energy. ‘‘ It was the way [ catcher
Geovany] Soto took me under his wing,’’ Kopech said. ‘‘ The first thing he said was: ‘ Let’s have fun. Let’s get after it.’ The way he was calling pitches and aggressive with me behind the plate, that made me more aggressive toward hitters.’’
Kopech, 20, likely will start the season at Class A WinstonSalem. He has 11 strikeouts in six innings this spring.
Yoan Moncada, one of the other prospects in the Sale deal, singled in his only at- bat and scored. Moncada, who homered twice in his previous game, raised his average to .265.
Salad days
Tyler Saladino (. 406) tripled and scored, and Nicky Delmonico hit his second homer.
