Indiana lands Dayton’s Miller
Less than 24 hours after UCLA coach Steve Alford removed his name from consideration for the coaching job at Indiana, Hoosiers athletic director Fred Glass announced the hiring Saturday of Dayton coach Archie Miller.
Miller, who reportedly agreed to a seven- year contract worth about $ 4 million a season, will be introduced at a news conference Monday. He replaces Tom Crean, who was fired March 16 after missing the NCAA tournament five times in nine seasons.
‘‘ Archie Miller was on my short list from the very beginning,’’ Glass said in a statement. ‘‘ The more I learned about him, the more convinced I became that he is the coach we need to meet our high expectations for many years to come.’’
Miller, 38, had a 139- 63 record in six seasons at Dayton and led the Flyers to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.
GOLF Match Play semifinals set
Dustin Johnson reached the semifinals of the WGC Match Play tournament with victories against Zach Johnson ( 5 and 4) and Alex Noren ( 3 and 2) in Austin, Texas.
Joining Johnson in the semis were Jon Rahm, Bill Haas and Hideto Tanihara. Haas ousted Phil Mickelson 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals.
NFL Bengals release Maualuga
The Cincinnati Bengals released veteran linebacker Rey Maualuga, saying they were moving to a younger group at the position.
Maualuga was the Bengals’ second- round draft pick in 2009 and played in 114 games for them, including 104 starts.
MISCELLANEOUS Wolves fall in shootout
Kris Newbury scored the decisive goal in the shootout to lift the Charlotte Checkers to a 3- 2 victory against the visiting Wolves in American Hockey League play. Jordan Caron scored in the first period and Wade Megan in the third for the Wolves ( 37- 18- 7- 5).
John Wall led seven players in double figures with 37 points, and the Washington Wizards shot 60 percent on their way to defeating the host Cleveland Cavaliers 127- 115.
Arrogate overcame a slow start to earn a 2 ¼ - length victory in the $ 10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
