The Detroit Red Wings’ 25- season streak of qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs ended after a 4- 1 loss Tuesday to the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The loss, along with victories by the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs, eliminated the Red Wings from playoff contention for the first time since the 1990- 91 season. It was the longest active playoff streak in the four major pro sports.

It was the teams’ second game in two nights after they played a makeup game Monday in Raleigh. That was caused by a cancellation Dec. 19 because of unplayable ice.

The Hurricanes said goalie Eddie Lack is out of the hospital and has strained muscles in his neck after being wheeled off the ice on a stretcher after a collision with Red Wings center Andreas Athanasiou in overtime Monday.

Eagles strike deal with DE Long

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms on a two- year contract with defensive end Chris Long, who won a Super Bowl last season with the New England Patriots. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Long, the older brother of Bears guard Kyle Long, spent eight seasons with the St. Louis Rams before joining the Patriots in 2016. He had four sacks and 10 quarterback hits in 16 games for the Patriots and was an integral part of a defense that allowed an NFL- low 250 points.

The Dallas Cowboys signed 14- year veteran tight end Jason Witten to a four- year contract extension that virtually ensures he will spend his entire careerwith the team. The deal, which runs through the 2021 season, has a maximum value of $ 29 million but doesn’t include any guaranteed money.

Pacers lose another player

The Indiana Pacers will be without guard Rodney Stuckey for four to six weeks because of a strained tendon in his left knee. He is the third key player — center Al Jefferson ( sprained ankle) and forward Glenn Robinson III ( strained calf) — the Pacers have lost down the stretch of the regular season.

Duke forward Harry Giles, N. C. State point guard Dennis Smith and Xavier point guard Edmund Sumner said they will enter the NBA draft in June.

U. S. notches tie in qualifying

Clint Dempsey scored in the 39th minute, and the United States earned an important point in World Cup qualifying with a 1- 1 tie against host Panama. Tim Howard made three saves for Team USA.
