SUSPECT, VICTIM HURTIN HOME INVASION SHOOT OUT

A home invasion suspect was critically injured in an exchange of gunfire with the occupant of a southwest suburban Stickney home, who was also wounded Wednesday morning.

Shortly before 9: 30 a. m., two masked gunmen— 19- year- old Carlos Tapia and 18- year- old Alberto Manzo — forcibly entered the home in the 4800 block of South Lockwood Avenue in Stickney, intending to takemoney and drugs, according to Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoma­n Sophia Ansari.

Tapia pointed an assault style weapon at a 20- year- old man inside the home, she said. But the man, whowas also armed, shot Tapia multiple times. He was also shot once by Tapia, Ansari said.

The victim’s 17- year- old brother jumped out of a window to get away from the gunmen andwas not seriously injured.

The suspects left the scene and Manzo later dropped Tapia off at a hospital, Ansari said. Hewas listed in critical condition.

The 20-year- old

was also taken to a hospital to be treated, Ansari said. His condition was not immediatel­y known, but his injuries were not as serious as Tapia’s. Luke Wilusz

Mancharged with killing Berwyn couple

A Schaumburg man has been chargedwit­h fatally shooting a couple lastweek in their home inwest suburban Berwyn.

Roger M. Scoby, 40, is chargedwit­h two counts of murder in connection with their deaths, Berwyn police said Friday.

About 5: 30 a. m. March 31, officers found 67- year- old Ira L. Moore and his 70- year- old wife Tommie J. Moore dead on the kitchen floor at their home in the 3100 block of South Oak Park Avenue, police said.

An autopsy Saturday found that Ira Moore died of a gunshot wound to the head, and Tommie Moore died of a gunshot wound to the head and multiple stab wounds, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Evidence implicatin­g Scoby was recovered from his apartment and vehicle, and he confessed to the killings after hewas taken into custody with the help of the U. S. Marshal’s Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, police said. Tom Schuba

UIC prof wins award

A University of Illinois at Chicago professor is one of eight winners of a prestigiou­s literary award.

Luis Alberto Urrea has won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. The writer will receive the $ 10,000 award in New York nextmonth during a ceremony.

Urrea is a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for his nonfiction work titled “The Devil’s Highway: A True Story.” He’s won numerous other awards for poetry, fiction and essays.

In a statement released by UIC, Urrea says he’s “deeply grateful” for the honor.

Urrea lives in Naperville and came to UIC in 1999. He teaches creativewr­iting, nonfiction, fiction and poetry workshops.

Man dead in NW Side fire

A 75- year- old manwas pronounced dead Fridaymorn­ing after emergency crews responded to a house fire in the Norwood Park neighborho­od on the Northwest Side.

Crewswere called just before 6 a. m. to the home in the 5000 block of North Oak Park, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Loren Flensborg was found in the living room of the home andwas taken to a hospital where he died.

Mankilled in Archer Heights

A 21- year- old manwas fatally shot Friday evening in the Archer Heights neighborho­od on the Southwest Side, authoritie­s said.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired at 6: 48 p. m. in the 4900 block of South Kostner and learned Carlos Rosas had already taken himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, Chicago Police said. Hewas shot in the chest and neck. Matthew Hendrickso­n
