Yanks top Cards, win sixth in row

-

CC Sabathia ( 2- 0) allowed one run and three hits in 7⅓ innings, and the New York Yankees took advantage of Carlos Martinez’s wildness to earn a 3- 2 victory Saturday against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals that extended their winning streak to six games.

Martinez ( 0- 2) yielded three runs — two earned — and four hits and walked eight in 5⅓ innings. He also struck out 11 to become the first major- league pitcher since Randy Johnson in 1993 with at least that many strikeouts and that many walks in a game.

The Yankees tied a franchise record by striking out 17 times but still did enough to drop the Cardinals to 3- 8, their worst start in 20 years and the worst record in the National League.

Red Sox 2, Rays 1

Former White Sox ace Chris Sale ( 1- 1) struck out 12 in seven innings to earn his first victory in three starts for his new team, Mitch Moreland hit a solo home run and the host Boston Red Sox edged the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sale, whom the Red Sox acquired from the White Sox for four prospects in December, allowed one run and three hits and struck out seven of the last nine batters he faced.

Indians 13, Tigers 6

Jose Ramirez went 4- for- 4 with two three- run homers, and the Cleveland Indians pounded Justin Verlander ( 1- 1) for nine runs and 11 hits in four- plus innings in a rout of the visiting Detroit Tigers.

Verlander yielded homers to Ramirez, Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall and fell to 19- 22 in his career against the Indians, the most losses he has against any team.

Reds 7, Brewers 5

Pinch hitter Jesse Winkler doubled home two runs in the sixth inning with his first major- league hit, and the host Cincinnati Reds overcame an injury to starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan ( strained muscle in left side) and two homers by Eric Thames to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rockies 5, Giants 0

Tyler Chatwood ( 1- 2) pitched 5⅔ perfect innings before settling for a two- hitter and his first majorleague shutout as the visiting Colorado Rockies blanked the San Francisco Giants, who lost outfielder Jarrett Parker to a broken right collarbone suffered while crashing into the wall in the fourth.

Dodgers honor Robinson with statue

The Los Angeles Dodgers unveiled a bronze statue of Jackie Robinson stealing home on the 70th anniversary of him breaking the major- league color barrier in 1947. The statue outside Dodger Stadium was unveiled before the team’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
