RB Macon, Bears’ first black player, dies at 90

Running back Eddie Macon, the Bears’ first African- American player, died Wednesday at 90 after a short illness.

A second- round pick in 1952, Macon attended what is now the University of the Pacific, where he also was the first African- American football player there. He carried 70 times for 324 yards in his two seasons with the Bears ( 1952- 53).

Macon left the Bears in 1954 to play in Canada and returned for one season with the American Football League’s Oakland Raiders. He worked in the ports of San Francisco and Oakland until eight years ago, according to the Record of Stockton, California, where he lived with his wife of 71 years, Jessie.

Bruins stay alive with 2- OT win

Sean Kuraly scored his second goal of the game midway through the second overtime, Tuukka Rask made 41 saves and the visiting Boston Bruins stayed alive in their Eastern Conference first- round playoff series by outlasting the Ottawa Senators 3- 2 to cut their deficit to 3- 2. Game 6 is set for Sunday in Boston.

Justin Williams scored 1: 04 into overtime to lift the host Washington Capitals to a 2- 1 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 3- 2 lead in their Eastern Conference first- round playoff series. Four of the five games have gone to overtime or beyond. Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday in Toronto.

Adam Musil scored the tiebreakin­g goal with 5: 11 left in the third period, Ville Husso made 37 saves and the visiting Wolves evened their American Hockey League first- round playoff series against the Charlotte Checkers at a game each with a 3- 2 victory. Game 3 is at 2 p. m. Sunday at Allstate Arena.

Dirt bike lands Mad Bum on DL

The San Francisco Giants put ace left- hander Madison Bumgarner ( 0- 3, 3.00 ERA this season) on the disabled list for the first time in his career after a dirt- bike accident on a day off Thursday in Colorado landed him in a hospital with bruised ribs and a sprained joint in his pitching shoulder. The Giants said Bumgarner is out of the hospital and will be re- evaluated next week.

Bryce Harper homered in the first inning, then doubled and scored the go- ahead run on a bases- loaded walk by Jeurys Familia in the 11th to lift the visiting Washington Nationals past the New York Mets 4- 3.

Fire fall in Toronto

Sebastian Giovinco scored once in each half, and host Toronto FC ended the Fire’s four- game unbeaten streak with a 3- 1 victory in Major League Soccer action. David Accam scored the lone goal for the Fire ( 3- 2- 2) in the 88th minute.

Two tied for lead at PGA stop

Tony Finau shot a 7- under- par 65 and Bud Cauley a 6- under 66 to share a one- stroke lead after the second round of the Texas Open in San Antonio. Both players completed 36 holes at 8- under 136.
