Wheaton’s Davis taken fifth by Titans

-

The Titans gave quarterback Marcus Mariota a playmaking receiver by selecting Western Michigan’s Corey Davis with the fifth overall pick in the draft.

Davis, who starred at Wheaton Warrenville South, ended his college career as the only Football Bowl Subdivision player with at least 300 catches, 5,000 yards and 50 touchdown receptions. He had an FBS record 5,285 yards receiving and had said before the draft that Mariota is his favorite NFL quarterback.

The concern surrounding the 6- 3 Davis is whether he can translate his Mid- American Conference success to the NFL.

Davis’ pre- draft process created other concerns. Davis didn’t participate in the Senior Bowl due to a shoulder injury and didn’t run the 40- yard dash at the combine or at Western Michigan’s pro day because of an ankle problem.

Lions take LB Davis at No. 21

The Lions drafted Florida linebacker Jarrad Davis with the No. 21 pick.

Detroit addressed a desperate need, adding a player who could fill in for released linebacker DeAndre Levy and perhaps bolster the franchise’s weakest link.

The 6- 1, 238- pound Davis missed about a third of last season with an ankle injury, but was still secondteam All- SEC. He played in nine games, making 60 tackles, including two sacks.

The Lions most significant additions this offseason have been on offense, signing veteran linemen Rick Wagner and T. J. Lang.

Texans swap to get QB Watson

The Texans addressed their need at quarterback by trading with Cleveland to select Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson with the 12th overall pick.

The Texans traded away the 25th overall pick in this year’s draft as well as their first- round selection next season to nab Watson.

The Browns already have Houston’s second- round pick in 2018 after receiving it in the trade for Brock Osweiler this offseason. Houston was in desperate need of a quarterback after giving up on Osweiler and trading him away one inconsistent season after signing him to a $ 72 million contract in 2016.

The only quarterbacks on their roster before the draft were Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden, giving Watson a great chance to start as a rookie.

Chiefs move up to take Mahomes

The Chiefs boldly moved up in the draft to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, giving them an heir apparent to veteran Alex Smith.

Kansas City sent its first- round picks this year and next year and one of two third- round picks in this year’s draft to Buffalo, climbing from the No. 27 pick to take the second QB off the board.

It’s the third time in the common draft era that Kansas City has taken a quarterback in the first round, and the first since Todd Blackledge in 1983. Mahomes is also the second QB to be taken in the first round by an Andy Reid- coached team follow- ing Donovan McNabb with Philadelphia in 1999.

Packers add more picks

The Packers, who had the 29th overall pick, traded out of the first round, receiving two selections from the Browns — second round ( No. 33) and fourth round ( No. 108).

The Vikings didn’t have a first- round pick after trading it away last year for quarterback Sam Bradford.

The Redskins signed right tackle Morgan Moses to a five- year extension, according to ESPN. The deal reportedly will make Moses the second highest- paid right tackle.

The Giants picked up the fifth- year option on receiver Odell Beckham Jr.’ s contract.

Former Ohio State star Gareon Conley, who was selected No. 22 overall by the Raiders, plans to meet with detectives and give a DNA sample to counter accusations that he raped a woman earlier this month.
