Syndergaard out at least till break

-

The New York Mets said ace right- hander Noah Syndergaard will be sidelined at least through the All- Star break because of a torn muscle behind his pitching arm.

Syndergaard, the hardest- throwing starting pitcher in the majors with an average fastball velocity of 98.7 mph this season, partially tore his lat muscle during a game last Sunday against the Washington Nationals. He has been told not to throw for six weeks and will need a long period — perhaps the equivalent of a full spring training — to build up his arm strength again.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson wouldn’t give a timetable for Syndergaard’s return and said he might be put on the 60- day disabled list.

Price might be ready by end of May

The Boston Red Sox said left- hander David Price, who has been out all season, might return to the starting rotation by the end of May, provided he continues to feel good in his recovery from a strained left elbow.

Price, who was 17- 9 last season, has been doing well throwing simulated games, and manager John Farrell said his next simulated session — scheduled for Tuesday — ideally would be his last before he begins a minor- league rehab assignment.

Reds 14, Giants 2

Adam Duvall, Patrick Kivlehan and Eugenio Suarez hit home runs, and nine of the Cincinnati Reds’ 18 hits went for extra bases in their second consecutive rout of the visiting San Francisco Giants. The Reds, who won 13- 3 on Friday, have scored a combined 27 runs in back- to- back games for the first time in seven years.

Cardinals 5, Braves 3

Mike Leake ( 4- 1) allowed three runs and three hits in seven innings to win his fourth consecutive decision, Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams homered and the St. Louis Cardinals handed the host Atlanta Braves their third loss in a row to improve to 12- 5 since their 3- 9 start.

Pirates 2, Brewers 1

Josh Harrison singled home Gift Ngoepe with one out in the 10th inning to boost the Pittsburgh Pirates past the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. It was the seventh time in his career Harrison delivered a walk- off hit.

Indians 3, Royals 1

Carlos Santana and Francisco Lindor hit back- toback homers in a span of three pitches against Kelvin Herrera ( 1- 1) with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Cleveland Indians past the host Kansas City Royals.
