Eaton has surgery on torn left ACL

-

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said former White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton had surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and started a rehab program Wednesday that is expected to last six to nine months.

The injury occurred during a game April 28 against the New York Mets, when Eaton stepped on first base awkwardly while beating out an infield hit.

Rizzo said Eaton’s rehab began with massage and range- of- motion work. It will be about a month before he can put weight on the knee.

‘‘ In four weeks, he’ll ramp it up,’’ Rizzo said. ‘‘ He’s tolerating the pain and on his way to getting better.’’

Eaton, whom the Nationals acquired in a trade with the Sox in December, was hitting .287 with two home runs, 13 RBI, 24 runs scored and a .393 on- base percentage in 23 games when the injury occurred.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee suffered while trying to make a sliding catch on Andrew McCutchen’s ground- rule double in an effort to preserve a no- hitter in the seventh inning Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cardinals 7, Marlins 5

Pinch hitter Dexter Fowler, who has been troubled by a sore lat, smacked a two- run triple in the sixth inning — the second consecutive game he came off the bench to drive in the go- ahead run — and the St. Louis Cardinals completed a 6- 0 road trip by rallying past the Miami Marlins.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the first time in the Cardinals’ 126- year history that they went undefeated on a trip of at least six games.

Nationals 7, Orioles 6

Matt Wieters singled home the tying and winning runs in the ninth inning against his former team, and the Washington Nationals rallied from a four- run deficit after seven innings to end the visiting Baltimore Orioles’ six- game winning streak.

Mark Trumbo and Manny Machado homered to help the Orioles build a 6- 2 lead, but the Nationals scored twice in the eighth and three times in the ninth to end a three- game skid.

Rays 12, Royals 1

Chris Archer ( 3- 1) scattered five hits in eight scoreless innings, and the host Tampa Bay Rays roughed up former Cubs right- hander Jason Hammel ( 1- 4) for seven runs and 13 hits in seven innings in a rout of the Kansas City Royals.

Astros 4, Braves 2

Carlos Correa had two doubles and two RBI, and the Houston Astros topped the visiting Atlanta Braves to set a record for the best 34- game start — 23- 11 — in franchise history. Sun- Times wires
