Mickelson to miss U. S. Open

-

Phil Mickelson said he will skip the U. S. Open this month to attend his oldest daughter’s high school graduation. The tournament will be held June 15- 18 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin.

Mickelson told the New York Times that being at the ceremony for daughter Amanda is something he will cherish forever. He hasn’t missed the U. S. Open since his first full season as a pro in 1993.

Amanda, who will be the valedictorian of her class, was born the Monday after the 1999 U. S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, the first of a record six runner- up finishes for Mickelson in the only major he hasn’t won. He carried a beeper that week and pledged to leave the tournament, even if he was leading, to be there for her birth.

‘‘ It’s a tournament that I want to win the most,’’ Mickelson said. ‘‘ The only way to win is if you play and have a chance. But this is one of those moments where you look back on life and you just don’t want to miss it. I’ll be really glad I was there and present.’’

Daniel Summerhays shot a 4- under- par 68 and took advantage of a meltdown by second- round leader Jason Dufner to take a three- stroke edge over Matt Kuchar into the final round of the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. Summerhays completed 54 holes at 13- under 203.

Dufner began the round with a five- stroke lead over Summerhays, but he made four consecutive bogeys on the front nine, then hit two balls into the water on the back nine on his way to a 5- over 77 that left him four shots back.

Paula Creamer and In- Kyung Kim each shot a 4- under 67 to share a twostroke lead after the second round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway Township, New Jersey. Creamer and Kim finished 36 holes at 9- under 133.
